In his book “Sports Astrology” John Frawley observes that, in the judgement of contest charts, the Moon’s aspects probably indicate the outcome of more matches than any other testimonies:  Here, the Moon immediately applies to oppose a retrograde Saturn.  Despite the challenging nature of the opposition aspect, this is a powerful testimony for favourites Arsenal.   

Saturn is also conjunct the Part of Fortune, but the aspect is separating and also not quite close enough:  A conjunction within orb of 2-3 degrees might lend further support to Arsenal’s cause.

However, for all practical purposes (and in the absence of any testimonies favouring Liverpool), the applying opposition between the Moon and Saturn should be sufficient to prove the bookies correct and herald a win for Arsenal.

Manchester City are hotly tipped to win Sunday’s match against hosts Wolves.  As favourites, they are signified by Saturn (ruler of the 1^st house) and Mars, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites). 

Although they have the home advantage, Wolves are not the favourites, so are signified by the opposing 7^th house.   

The Moon, ruler of the 7^th house, already has an important role describing how the events of the match will unfold.  As the Moon is in Gemini, her dispositor is Mercury, who steps in as main significator for Wolves.  Venus, ruler of the 4^th house (the house of victory for the underdogs), is their co-significator.  

The Moon applies to a square with Saturn.  This is the only testimony of note in the chart, and it favours Manchester City.  The challenging nature of the square aspect and the retrograde motion of Saturn make no difference to the meaning of this testimony – it remains highly positive for the favourites  

Mercury, for Wolves, applies to conjunct the cusp of the 10^th house, but is not close enough (an orb of 1-2 degrees is the maximum in contest charts) to present a serious challenge to Manchester City’s hopes for victory:  A win for the favourites seems the most likely outcome.

Astrological football forecasts for the Premier League will return after the International Break – watch this space!

At the time of writing, Tottenham are just one place and point in the table ahead of hosts Brighton. Nevertheless, the pundits seem confident in their expectation of victory for Spurs. 

As favourites, Spurs are awarded the 1^st house and its ruler, Saturn (the traditional ruler of Aquarius).  They have Jupiter (the ruler of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites) as their co-significator.   

The Sun, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, represent Brighton.  Mercury, ruler of the 4^th house, is their co-significator.   

However, none of these planets play a major role in the contest chart for this match.  Instead, the Moon’s applying trine to the Part of Fortune (at 26 Pisces 22), is most likely to decide the result in favour of the favourites, Tottenham.

As favourites, Aston Villa are signified by Jupiter, lord of the 1^st house, and Venus, lord of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites).   

Hosts Ipswich Town are represented by Mercury (lord of the opposing 7^th house) and Mars, lord of the 4^th house.   

Mercury (Ipswich) is severely weakened by his approaching conjunction with the South Node, and combustion with the Sun.  These are challenging testimonies, which work powerfully against Ipswich.   

Jupiter (lord of the 1^st house, for Aston Villa) sits on the cusp of the 7^th house, dominating the fortunes of their rivals.

Manchester United are currently on a winning streak, having won their last three games. Can they make this match against Crystal Palace their fourth win in a row?    

Their last match against Crystal Palace saw Manchester United held to a 4-0 defeat.  Nevertheless, United are currently placed 10^th in the table to Palace’s 16^th and the pundit’s favourites: They are awarded Saturn (ruler of the 1^st house) and Jupiter (lord of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites).   

Rivals Palace are signified by the Sun (ruler of the opposing 7^th house) and Mercury (ruler of the 4^th house). 

Jupiter, ruler of the 10^th house (for Manchester United) is placed in the 4^th house.  Were Jupiter closer to the house cusp, this would be a powerful testimony in favour of Crystal Palace:  The 4^th house is the house of victory for the underdogs, so Jupiter, a significator for the favourites placed near the cusp of the 4^th house would show the fortunes of Manchester United held hostage by Crystal Palace.   

A more convincing testimony is the applying lunar trine to Mercury, ruler of the 4^th house cusp.  The Moon shows the progress of events, so her applying aspect to one of Palace’s main significators inclines the match in their favour.   

In the absence of any testimonies in favour of the favourites (Manchester United) it looks likely that Palace have the advantage in this game, and the better chance of victory.

Pluto casts his shadow over the fortunes of the favourites, Aston Villa, applying retrograde to conjunct the cusp of the 1^st house.  This suggests that Aston Villa will not play as well as expected: Will this be enough to deny them victory in this Saturday’s game against Everton? 

As favourites, Aston Villa are signified by the 1^st house, its ruler Saturn.  They are also represented by Jupiter (ruler of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites).   

Everton would usually have the ruler of the 7^th house as their main significator, but the Moon (7^th house ruler) already has a key role describing the events of the match.  The Moon’s dispositor, Saturn, who would usually step in as substitute, has already been signed to Aston Villa as their main significator.  

As a result, Everton have only one planet to represent them; Mercury (ruler of the 4^th house, the house of victory for the underdogs).   

The aspect from Pluto to the 1^st house cusp is the only aspect of note within the 5-degree orb considered most effective for a 90-minute football match. Pluto is placed just inside the 1^st house, rather than on the cusp: This mitigates his venom, but is a powerful affliction, nonetheless.

With one testimony for each team, the match may prove more equal than the pundits expect.
