The bookies favour home side Newcastle for the win, but what do the heavens say?

Jupiter (ruler of the 1st and 10th houses) represents the favourites, whilst Mercury (ruler of the 7th and 4th houses) is significator for their rivals, Aston Villa.

Her next (and final significant aspect over the 5-degree orb considered most reliable in 90-minute football matches) is a sextile to Mercury.  This also favours Aston Villa.

All testimonies favour the underdogs. If the bookies are correct in naming Newcastle as the favourites, this chart suggests a good result for Aston Villa.

Matches scheduled around the time of the New Moon frequently have the Part of Fortune on or near the Ascendant.  Experience teaches that the favourites do not always win these matches, so this testimony can be discounted.  

More significantly, the Moon is in the 10th house.  At slightly over 2 degrees from the house cusp, the Moon is close enough to matter: This is a strong testimony for the favourites.  

Arsenal are at 2nd place in the table while Leeds are in 5th. Furthermore, a quick survey of the bookies confirm that Arsenal are currently odds-on favourites.  In the absence of any balancing testimonies in favour of Leeds, the Moon looks set to award victory to Arsenal.

According to the bookies, Tottenham Hotspur are hot favourites to win. But do the heavens agree? 

Saturn (lord 1) and Jupiter (lord of the 10th house, the house of victory for the favourites) represent Spurs.  

As the Moon already has a role describing the events of the match, Mercury, her dispositor, steps in as substitute significator for Everton.  As Mercury also rules the 4th house (the house of victory for the underdogs), he is the sole representative for Everton in this match.

The Moon applies to oppose Saturn, lord of the 1st house.  Despite the challenging nature of the aspect, this is a positive sign for the favourites, Spurs.  

Retrograde Pluto (who, John Frawley observes, seems to hold a grudge against the favourites) is menacingly close to the 1st house cusp.  His baleful influence is mitigated by his being in a different sign to the house cusp (the ascendant for the kickoff time is 29 Capricorn 07, whilst Pluto is in Aquarius).  However, should the start of the match be delayed by three minutes or more, Pluto could spell real problems for Spurs.  

To sum up, the heavens agree with the bookies : Provided the match starts on time, a win for the favourites is the most likely outcome.  However, should a delay to the kickoff bring Pluto into play, the result is much less certain.

The start of the new season is always tricky for forecasts: Post-transfer teams have yet to show their mettle and, in many cases, there will be new managers as well as new players.  This does not affect the astrology, but the bookmaker’s odds, (on which we depend to choose the favourite (in our preferred Frawley system) can be less reliable for the first few weeks.  

However, if you favour the astrological forecasting system which  assigns the 1st house to the home team, and the 7th to the visitors, this is less of a problem. 

In this match, the first Premier League fixture of the new season, Arsenal are favourites according to both criteria: The bookmaker’s odds favour Arsenal to win and they are also the home side.  However, newly-promoted Coventry will be keen to make an impression. What do the heavens say? 

As favourites, Arsenal are represented by Saturn (lord of the 1st house) and Jupiter (lord of the 10th house, the house of victory for the favourites).

Coventry have the Sun (lord of the 7th house) and Mercury (lord of the 4th house) as their significators. 

The Sun, for Coventry, is strongly placed in his own sign of Leo, just inside the cusp of the 7th house: Although this testimony does not (by itself) guarantee a win, it is a sign that Coventry will prove formidable opposition.  

The Moon, who shows how events will unfold, is placed just inside the 10th house (Arsenal’s house of victory.  This is a much stronger testimony of a win for the favourites.  

The Moon makes just one significant aspect over the 5-degree orb considered most reliable for 90-minute football matches: A trine to Mercury (lord of the 4th house) for Coventry.  Technically, this is just over the limit of 5-degrees, but may signify a last-minute chance for the Sky Blues.
