Saturday 27th August 2022: Arsenal vs Fulham

The match chart for this Saturday’s game between Arsenal and Fulham once again illustrates the importance of the Part of Fortune in judging contest charts.

Arsenal are the favourites, and are awarded Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10, victory for the favourites) as their significators.

With the Moon already occupied as significator of the progress of events, her dispositor Mercury steps in as a substitute for Lord 7, main significator for rivals Fulham. They are also awarded Venus (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs).

However, none of these planets have a major role in the forthcoming match: The main players are the Moon and the Part of Fortune.

The Part of Fortune is in the 1st house, very close to the house cusp. This is always the case with matches played around the new Moon, yet the records show that the favourites do not win every match scheduled at this time: Therefore, the bodily placement of the Part of Fortune is not considered significant.

Nor do the placement of the North and South Nodes (in the 4th and 10th houses) signify: They only carry weight in contest charts when they aspect the teams planetary significators.

More important is the Moon’s trine to the Part of Fortune. Within the 5-degree orb considered reliable for 90-minute football matches, this is a powerful testimony for the favourites which would be difficult to beat even if there were any other testimonies of equal strength in the chart.

Instead, we have only one weak testimony for Fulham, a trine from the Moon to the antiscion of Venus (Lord 4) at 10 Taurus 29. At best this signifies a goal for Fulham, but is not sufficiently powerful to threaten Arsenal’s anticipated victory.

Friday 20th August 2022: Spurs vs Wolves

The Part of Fortune often has a key part to play in sporting contests, and never more so than this intriguing chart for Saturday’s match between Spurs and Wolves.

As favourites, Spurs are awarded Mars (Lord 1) and the Sun (Lord of the 10th house; victory for the favourites).

Rivals Wolves are represented by Venus (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Saturn (Lord of the 4th house; victory for the underdogs).

The Sun (for Spurs) is strongly placed in his own house, but too far from the house cusp to help his team’s cause:  An orb of around 2 degrees or less is usually the most effective in such cases.

Saturn (for Wolves) is also strongly placed in his own house but is much closer to the house cusp.  Because of his retrograde motion, he is moving closer still:  Spurs would do well not to underestimate Wolves, who will prove formidable opposition.

With the Moon, (who represents the progress of events) making no aspects to any of the main significators within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for 90-minute football matches, the Part of Fortune steps forward as the key player in this chart.

Being linked to the Moon’s phases, the placement of the Part of Fortune by house is rarely significant:  Every lunar month it will be in the same position, matching its related point in the Moon’s cycle.  The placement of the Part of Fortune in the 10th house can therefore be overlooked.

However, the conjunction of the Part of Fortune with the Sun (Lord 10) is worthy of note:  Had the orb of aspect been closer, this would award Spurs the match.  At over 7 degrees distant, such a result cannot be guaranteed, but the aspect is nevertheless important.

The applying opposition between Saturn and the Part of Fortune is closer, and therefore more significant:  It is further evidence that Wolves will be a force to be reckoned with.

If the bodily placement of the Part of Fortune is not significant, the same cannot be said for its antiscion. Here, at 09 Taurus 49, it is placed in the 7th house: A vote of confidence for Wolves. It is not close enough to the cusp to signify a win (an orb of 2 degrees or less would be required to guarantee Wolves the match) but it is a testimony worthy of consideration.

So, we have one testimony for Spurs and three for Wolves, none of which conclusively promise a win for either side.

Wolves will have to play extremely well to win, but will certainly give Spurs a run for their money: A close result is to be expected and a draw cannot be ruled out.

Friday 13th August 2022: Aston Villa vs Everton

In terms of form, there is little to choose between these teams: Still early in the season, they have played one game each, and both lost. Everton conceded less goals, and currently reside one place higher in the Premiership. However, the bookies favour Aston Villa, who will be playing at home. In John Frawley’s system of contest forecasts, the home team is not automatically considered the favourites, but here this seems the case.

As favourites, Aston Villa are awarded the 1st house, its ruler Venus (at 02 Leo 05) and the Sun (10th house ruler, representing success in general and victory for the favourites in particular).

Rivals Everton are described by Mars (ruler of the opposing 7th house) and Saturn, ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs).

A very late degree rises (29 Libra 29).  If the kickoff is delayed, there is potential for the main significators of the teams to swap over (with Scorpio rising, Mars will signify the 1st house and the favourites and Venus will represent the 7th house and the underdogs). However, the Moon (significator of events) aspects neither Venus or Mars within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for 90-minute football matches, and nor are any other placements of these planets significant, so a late kickoff is unlikely to effect the outcome.

The antiscion of Mars (at 04 Leo 06) is a bit too far from the 10th house cusp (success) to be significant for Everton. Similarly the conjunction between Mars and the Part of Fortune is too wide for this to help their cause.

However, the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 10 Leo 59) aligns with the 10th house cusp exactly: Potentially, this is a winning testimony for the favourites which, if the pundits are correct in their choice, will give Aston Villa cause to celebrate this Saturday.

Friday 5th August 2022: Crystal Palace vs Arsenal

A new season brings new hope: Wishing all the best to my readers and every success to the teams you support!

In this week’s featured fixture: Will favourites Arsenal win this Friday, or will Crystal Palace have a few surprises the pundits? Let us see what the heavens have to say…

As favourites, Arsenal are represented by Saturn (Lord 1) and Jupiter (Lord of the 10th house, usually signifying victory for the favourites).

As the Moon will be busy describing events during the match, her dispositor Mars stands in a main significator for Crystal Palace. They are also described by Mercury, ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs).

Pluto, who astrologer John Frawley observes often has a grudge against the favourites, hovers menacingly over the 1st house. However, at over 2 degrees from the house cusp, Pluto is a little too distant to inflict much damage, and his retrograde motion is taking him further away, not closer. Arsenal’s performance may be very slightly impaired, but this is the most we can expect.

More significant are the Moon’s impending opposition to Mars (favourable for Crystal Palace) followed by a square to Saturn (for Arsenal).

As the Moon’s last aspect to a key planet usually decides the match, Arsenal fans should have cause to celebrate at the final whistle. However, Arsenal’s performance may not live up to all they are capable of, and there will also be chances for Crystal Palace to boost their standing with at least one goal.

Sunday 31st July 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro: England Women vs Germany Women

The only thing certain about this Sunday’s Women’s Euro Final is that we can expect a closely fought contest.  But what do the heavens say about who will lift the trophy?

The U.K. betting always favours England, but their 4-0 semi-final victory over Sweden suggests that this confidence may be merited. They are signifed by Jupiter (Lord 1) and Venus (Lord 10).

Rivals Germany are represented by Mercury (Lord 7) and Mars (Lord 4).

The Moon’s imminent trine to the Part of Fortune is a powerful testimony for the favourites, as is the next lunar aspect; a sextile to Venus (Lord 10).

The Moon’s next aspect, a trine to Mars, favours the underdogs. As this aspect is slightly beyond the 5-degree orb usually considered effective in a 90-minute football match, this could indicate an opportunity which arises very late in the game, perhaps even in extra time.

If they are truly the favourites, this chart inclines towards a win for England. But they should guard against a late resurgence by Germany, who might otherwise seize a fateful opportunity in extra time.

Saturday 30th July 2022 FA Community Shield: Liverpool vs Manchester City

At the time of writing, the odds are very close for both teams, with Manchester City having the slight advantage.

As favourites, Manchester City are signified by Jupiter (Lord 1) and Venus (Lord 10).

Mercury (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Mars (Lord 4) represent rivals Liverpool.

The key aspect in this chart is the Moon’s trine to the Part of Fortune which supports the favourites. If the betting is correct, this is a very fortunate testimony for Manchester City. The late degree of the Moon may indicate an important opportunity which occurs late in the game.

However, there is another intriguing testimony in this chart: Jupiter’s placement in the 4th house.

As Jupiter is the primary significator for Manchester City, his placement in the 4th house shows them in the power of Liverpool. Whether this aspect is enough to override the lunar trine to the Part of Fortune remains to be seen, but it promises a closely fought match in which the latter stages of the game will likely prove crucial.

Wednesday 27th July 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro: Germany Women vs France Women

Both teams finished top of their groups, but Germany won all their games and are odds-on favourites to win. Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10) represent them.

As with the previous game between England and Sweden, the 7th house is ruled by the Moon who, in the sign of Cancer, is her own dispositor. As the Moon is already spoken for as significator of events, France only has one planet to represent them; Venus (Lord 4).

The Moon applies to oppose Pluto, so is not void of course. She nevertheless makes no aspect to any of the main significators.

Nor do the placement of the planets offer any clues: All the main significators are too far from the key house cusps to help or hinder.

Astrology can do much, but sometimes the heavens do not wish to give up their secrets. This is a lacklustre chart which offers few clues to the outcome: Hopefully the game will prove more interesting!

Tuesday 26th July 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro: England Women vs Sweden Women

England are clearly the favourites with the U.K. bookies and betting public, but is this confidence justified? Probably. Both England and Sweden finished top of their groups, but only England won all their games, in the process scoring an impressive 14 goals. As favourites they are signified by Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10).

Sweden won two games and held the mighty Netherlands to a draw: By this reckoning alone, they won’t prove easy to beat. The lord of the 7th house is the Moon, whose role as significator of events takes precedence over any other responsibilities she may have in the chart. Usually, we could use the Moon’s dispositor as an alternative significator, but with the Moon in Cancer, the sign ruled by the Moon, this is not possible. This leaves Venus (Lord 4) as the sole significator for Sweden.

The Moon’s placement directly on the 7th house cusp is a boon for Sweden: They have their eyes on a place in the final and will play accordingly. Venus’ placement close to the 7th house cusp adds support to this testimony, and to Sweden.

The placement of the Nodes on house cusps does have much influence in contest charts (only aspects from the Nodes to significators seems to count), so we can ignore the North Node’s conjunction with the 4th house cusp, and the South Node’s affliction of the 10th house.

The impending lunar sextile to Mars is more important: As the last aspect of the Moon (to a main significator) within the 5-degree orb usually effective for a 90-minute football match, this should award victory to England.

However, the heavens warn that Sweden will prove formidable opponents, and England would be wise to bear this in mind.

Saturday 23rd July 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro: France Women vs Netherlands Women

At the time of writing, France are odds-on favourites: They are signified by Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10).

The Moon rules the 7th house. As she is already spoken for as significator of the progress of events, we look to the Moon’s dispositor (Mercury) to represent the Netherlands. They are also represented by Venus (Lord 4).

Mars, (Lord 10) applies to oppose the Part of Fortune. According to John Frawley in his book “Sports Astrology”, this is a rare example (in the judging of contest charts) where the challenging nature of the opposition aspect matters: Although this aspect involves Mars, one of France’s significators, it favours the Netherlands. This testimony may seem something of an anomaly, and it will be interesting how it plays out in practice.

Another intriguing testimony is the conjunction of Mercury’s antiscion (at 21 Taurus 14) with the North Node. This again favours the Netherlands.

There is little else going on in this chart by placement or aspect: Mars is too far from the 4th house cusp to have any effect. The bodily placement of the Part of Fortune on the 10th house cusp is not significant, as the Part of Fortune is determined by the Moon’s phase and will be the same at this point in every lunar month.

The pundits expect a victory for France, but the heavens suggest that the Netherlands will not make this easy.

Friday 22nd July 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro: Sweden Women vs Belgium Women

At the time of writing, Sweden are odds-on favourites to win: They are signified by Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10).

Rivals Belgium are signified by Venus (Lord 4). Venus is Belgium’s sole representative as the Moon (Lord 7) already has a role as significator of events, and the Moon’s dispositor (which would usually be substituted in such cases) is also Venus.

First, a look at the placements for some of the main significators: Mars (Lord 1) hovers fairly close to the 4th house cusp. This affords a slight advantage to Sweden, but Mars is not quite close enough to the house cusp to be conclusive (a maximum orb of 2 degrees is preferred).

The Moon is placed in the 4th house, but again is too far from the 4th house cusp to be truly helpful to Belgium.

More positively for Belgium, Venus (Lord 4) is close to the 7th house cusp: This is a strengthening influence which shows that Belgium will go all out to deny Sweden victory.

There is only one aspect of significance, and it involves the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 28 Aquarius 13): This, a square from the Moon, favours Belgium. Note that Saturn (Lord 1) is conjunct the antiscion of the Part of Fortune, but the aspect is separating (Saturn is retrograde) and therefore in the past. It is also beyond the 5-degree orb usually effective in a 90-minute football match, so does not signify.

In his book ‘Sports Astrology’, John Frawley states that aspects to Fortuna (the Part of Fortune) or its antiscion are usually final. If this should prove the case today, Belgium’s superior defensive capabilities could triumph over Sweden’s attacking style. Time will tell!
