Egypt may be the favourites to win this match, but a strong performance from DR Congo has proved they are not to be underestimated.  

As favourites, Egypt are represented by the Sun, ruler of the 1^st house and Mercury, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites). 

Their rivals DR Congo are signified by Saturn and Jupiter, lords of the 7^th and 4^th houses respectively. The Moon, which describes the flow of events applies to conjunct the antiscion of the Part of Fortune at 16 Virgo 17. This favours the favourites, Egypt.  

In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley notes that aspects from the Moon to the Part of Fortune or its antiscion are usually conclusive: This aspect from the Moon to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune should advance Egypt to the next round, although it will be with regret that we see DR Congo knocked out of the competition as The Leopards have enriched this tournament by playing some excellent football.

This match promises to be a close competition and it is difficult to decide on a favourite. For practical purposes, we will go with the majority decision of the pundits, who think Angola have the best chance of winning. 

As favourites, Angola are signified by the Sun, dispositor of the Moon: The Moon already has an important rule describing the flow of events, so when she rules the 1^st house her dispositor (the planet ruling the sign she is in) is chosen instead. 

As their co-significator, Angola have Mars (ruler of the 10^th house – the house of victory for the favourites).  

Rivals Namibia are represented by Saturn and Venus (rulers of the 7^th and 4^th houses respectively).  

The Moon is void of course, making no further aspects in her current sign of Leo. This often maintains the status quo, awarding the game to the favourites: In this match, it is a powerful testimony for Angola.  

The North Node close to the cusp of the 10^th house also boosts the fortunes of the favourites, just as the South Node on the cusp of the 4^th house is a powerful affliction for their rivals.  

The Sun (substitute significator for the favourites) applies closely to conjunct the Part of Fortune. This further supports the cause of the favourites. If the pundits are correct, and Angola are the true favourites, they are likely to have cause to celebrate this Saturday.

As favourites, the Ravens would usually be represented by the ruler of the 1^st house. The Moon rules Cancer, the sign on the cusp of the 1^st house. As the Moon already has a key role describing the flow of events, her dispositor Mercury steps in as main significator for the Ravens.  

They have Jupiter (ruler of the 10^th house; victory for the favourites) as their co-significator.  

Mercury, ruler of the 4^th house (house of victory for the underdogs) is already spoken for as substitute significator for the Chiefs, so they have just one planet to represent them; Saturn, ruler of the 7^th house.  

The Moon’s aspects show how events will unfold during the match. The only aspect she makes to a planet signifying either team is a trine to Mercury (for the Ravens).  

As a 5-degree orb of aspect is considered most effective for football matches of all kinds, and the Moon must travel just under 7 degrees to perfect this aspect it may not be crucial to the result.  

More significantly, the antiscion of Jupiter (at 13 Aquarius 02) is closely conjunct the Part of Fortune: This is a powerful testimony for the favourites, which should give the Ravens cause to celebrate this weekend.

The Sun is applying to closely conjunct Pluto: This could prove a serious problem for Guinea. In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley notes that Pluto seems to have some kind of grudge against the favourites. Pluto seemed to upset Egypt’s hopes of victory against Ghana in yesterday evening’s game, which resulted in a draw: It will be interesting to see if Guinea fare any better.

The Moon’s only applying aspect over the 5-degree limit considered most effective for a 90-minute football match is a trine to Mars; a powerful testimony for Ghana. 

The antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 28 Sagittarius 51) is conjunct Pluto: In his book “Sports Astrology, John Frawley observes that this a powerful testimony against the favourites. The Sun’s applying conjunction with Pluto might make things tricky for Egypt as well.  

Overall, the chart inclines in favour of Ghana. The only testimony in favour of Egypt is the placement of the antiscion of the Moon, which at 23 Leo 19 is placed just inside the 1^st house cusp. Whether this is strong enough to overrule the malevolent influence of Pluto remains to be seen.

The pundits think Morocco have the best chance of winning this match.

In John Frawley’s system of judging contest charts, the 1^st house and its ruler represent the favourites.  

The sign Cancer rises, and the Moon (ruler of Cancer) already has an important role, as her aspects describe how events will unfold during the match. Therefore, her dispositor Mars (who also rules the 10^th house; victory for the favourites) signifies Morocco. 

Their opponents Tanzania are represented by Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7^th house and Venus, ruler of the 4^th house. 

There is very little of note going on in this chart: The Moon is placed in the 10^th house, which would be a positive testimony for Morocco, if she were not so far from the house cusp. However, with the Moon 17 degrees from the house cusp, this testimony is too weak to signify.  

The Moon’s only aspect of note is an opposition to the antiscion of Saturn at 25 Libra 08. In the absence of any more powerful testimonies, this is a sign that the pundits may have underestimated Tanzania.

The Moon, placed just inside the 10^th house (victory for the favourites) is a significant boost to the fortunes of Tunisia.  

However, Tunisia’s significator Mars is ‘captured’ just inside the 7^th house, a sign that Namibia are determined not to let the favourites dominate the match.  

The Moon’s aspects decide the results of more contest charts than any other testimonies. What can they tell us here? 

The Moon first applies to a square with the antiscion of Venus at 08 Capricorn 12. This is a weak testimony in favour of Nambia.  

Her next and final aspect (over the 5-degree orb most effective for a 90-minute football match) is a square to Mars: This is a more powerful testimony for favourites Tunisia.  

The Moon favours the favourites, both by placement and aspect: Tunisia will have the edge over their rivals but should not allow themselves to become complacent.

Mars ‘captured’ in the 7^th house is a sign that Nambia will prove a force to be reckoned with and Tunisia will have to work harder than expected to get the result they want.
