2nd April 2022: Liverpool vs Watford

At the time of writing, 47 points separate 2nd placed Liverpool from Watford at 18th place in the table: With Liverpool clearly enjoying better form, the result of Saturday’s game at Anfield seems a foregone conclusion. But is this reflected in the heavens?

The 1st house and its ruler describe the favourites: Cancer rises, and with the Moon already spoken for as significator of events, her dispositor Mars is summoned from the substitute’s bench to represent Liverpool.

Rivals Watford are represented by the opposing 7th house and its ruler, Saturn.

Neither Saturn nor Mars have starring roles to play in this chart, by aspect or placement. Nor does the Moon, who is usually so critical to the result, make any significant aspect: At 27 Aries 10, her only and final aspect is a square to Pluto at 28 Capricorn 25.

Pluto’s exact placement on the cusp of the 7th house is not particularly detrimental to Watford but may afflict Liverpool’s performance due to his opposition of the 1st house cusp: John Frawley observes in his book “Sports Astrology” that Pluto seems to hold a grudge against the favourites.

The trine between the Part of Fortune (at 12 Leo 55) and its dispositor the Sun (at 12 Aries 42) is mildly helpful to favourites Liverpool but does not guarantee victory.

In the absence of more conclusive aspects, Liverpool should still emerge the winners, although their performance may not be their most memorable of the season due to the affliction from Pluto.

19th March 2022: Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Visitors Arsenal are favourites to win at Villa Park this Saturday, but the heavens suggest their victory may not be so certain.

The sign rising on the cusp of the 1st house (Cancer) represents favourites Arsenal. The 1st house ruler being already occupied as significator of events, the Moon’s dispositor (Venus, at 12 Aquarius 20) stands in as their main significator. Mars, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites) is their secondary significator.

Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7th house, represents hosts Astron Villa. They have no secondary significator as Venus (ruler of the 4th house, victory for the underdogs) is already spoken for by Arsenal.

The Moon has already moved past her trine aspects to Mars and Venus, so these do not count towards the result. However, her applying trine to the Part of Fortune is a very strong testimony of victory for the favourites. This being the only lunar aspect of note within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match, Arsenal might well feel confident of victory.

But another outcome is also possible. The next aspect the Moon makes is another trine, this time to Aston Villa’s main significator, Saturn: Being only just outside the 5-degree orb, this aspect offers hope to Aston Villa of levelling the score, and perhaps turning events in their favour towards the latter stages of the game, especially if the match runs into extra time.

12th March 2022: Brighton vs Liverpool

Currently placed 2nd in the table, Liverpool are clear favourites and are therefore described by the 1st house. Usually in contest charts where Cancer rises, the Moon’s dispositor would be summoned from the bench as substitute significator for Liverpool (the Moon being already occupied by her role as significator of events). However, the Moon is placed in Cancer, the sign she rules, so this is not possible either. This leaves Jupiter, the ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites)  as sole significator for Liverpool.

Their hosts Brighton are awarded Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7th house, and Mercury ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs).

As significator of events, the Moon makes two powerful aspects: A trine to the Part of Fortune and a trine to Jupiter. Both these testimonies favour Liverpool, confirming that (for this match at least) the opinions of the pundits are also reflected in the heavens.

6th March 2002: Manchester City vs Manchester United

The chart for this Sunday’s main event, a Manchester derby between City and United, is distinguished more by difficult aspects than favourable ones.

Currently residing at the top of the table, Manchester City are the clear favourites.  They are signified by the 1st house and its ruler, and the 10th house (victory for the favourites).

Rivals Manchester United are awarded the opposing 7th house, its ruler Jupiter and the 4th house (which represents victory for the underdogs).  Jupiter is strongly placed in Pisces, a sign he traditionally rules.  However, he is too far from the 7th house cusp to lend significant support to his team.  Additionally, he is combust (placed close to the Sun) which is severely debilitating.

In contest charts, the placement of the Nodes in houses is not usually significant.  However, with a lack of any other strong testimonies in this chart, and the proximity of the Nodes to the cusps of the 4th and 10th houses, they may have more power than usual, in which case the North Node’s conjunction with the 10th house cusp is beneficial for City and the South Node’s affliction of the 4th house is a further negative testimony for United.

With one testimony in favour of City and two against United, a home win is the most likely outcome.

26th February 2022: Leeds vs Tottenham Hotspur

Currently residing 8th in the table, with 39 points to Leeds United’s 23, Spurs are expected to win this Saturday’s match at Elland Road. But do the heavens agree?

Favourites Spurs are described by the 1st house. As Cancer rises and 1st house ruler the Moon is otherwise spoken for as significator of events, we look to the Moon’s dispositor (Saturn) as an alternative significator for Spurs. However, this won’t do either: Saturn, as ruler of the 7th house (representing the underdogs), has already been claimed by Leeds.

The only planet still available to represent Spurs is Jupiter, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites). Strongly placed in Pisces (one of the signs he traditionally rules) and placed in the 10th house of victory, his efforts alone may be sufficient to bring Spurs victory. The Moon certainly thinks so: Her applying sextile to Jupiter is a highly positive testimony for the favourites.

The Moon also applies to the 7th house cusp. If she was a bit closer to the house cusp (around 2 degrees is considered reliably effective), this could be a sign of victory for Leeds. But at over 4 degrees distant, the Moon is too far from the cusp to help their cause.

In the absence of any other testimonies for either side, it seems that Spurs will be the team celebrating at full time.

20th February 2022: Leeds vs Manchester United

After recent draws against Burnley and Southampton, Manchester United fans welcomed Tuesday’s 2-0 victory against Brighton. But can their team repeat that success this Sunday against Leeds?

As favourites, Manchester United are signified by the 1st house. Cancer rises, and the 1st house ruler the Moon is otherwise occupied as significator of events, so the role of main significator for Manchester United is assumed by the Moon’s dispositor, Venus.

The Moon immediately applies to square Venus, is a highly positive testimony for the favourites.

The applying conjunction between the Part of Fortune and its dispositor, Jupiter also favours the favourites.

With two positive testimonies for Manchester United, and none for Leeds, it seems likely that Manchester United fans will be celebrating another victory this Sunday.

12th February 2022: Manchester United vs Southampton

Some contest charts are more difficult to judge than others, and this weekend’s match between Manchester United and Southampton certainly presents some challenges.

With 39 points to Southampton’s 28, hosts Manchester United are clear favourites to win. They may have the confidence of the pundits, but due to the unusual nature of this chart, they lack a main (or even secondary significator) for the following reasons:

  • The Moon, ruler of the 1st house, is otherwise engaged as significator of events.
  • There is no lunar dispositor (as the Moon is in her own sign of Cancer)
  • The ruler of the 10th house (which often represents victory for the favourites) also rules the 7th house and has therefore been claimed as main significator for Southampton

Without any significators for the favourites, can the chart still be judged? There are some interesting testimonies which suggest it can:

  • The Sun (ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) applies to conjunct the cusp of the 10th house of success: This is very fortunate for Southampton
  • The Moon is strong in her own sign and placed in the 1st house, which John Frawley describes in his book “Sports Astrology” as “a big surge of energy towards (the team signified), almost as if the cosmos is cheering for it”. Although at 3 degrees distant the Moon is not quite close enough to the 1st house cusp to guarantee victory, this is still a fortunate sign Manchester United.

With the Sun supporting Southampton, and the Moon siding with Manchester United, this match promises to be closer than expected. As the main significator of events, the Moon’s testimony carries a little more influence, possibly enough to give Manchester the advantage. But with such strong testimonies for both sides, a draw is also possible.

5th February 2022: Burnley vs Watford

Although Watford are placed just ahead of Burnley in the table, at 14 points to 12, Burnley’s recent record against Watford is stronger and they have the traditional advantage of playing in front of a home crowd. The pundits therefore favour Burnley, but the heavens tell a more complex story…

As favourites, Burnley are signified by the Sun, ruler of the 1st house.

Saturn, Lord of the opposing 7th house represents Watford.

The main significators of both teams occupy the same degree of Aquarius. In traditional astrology, Saturn would be described as ‘cazimi’ (within the heart of the Sun), and would be considered greatly strengthened, as if he had been raised up to sit at the right hand of the king (represented by the Sun). However, in a contest chart, there is no king, just two opposing teams of (more or less) equal merit and status. As it seems unlikely that Burnley would embrace the role of ‘raising up’ or advancing the cause of their opponents Watford, Saturn being cazimi has little significance in this context.

What is more important is the Moon’s imminent sextile to both the Sun and Saturn, which hints at goals for both teams.

The only other aspect within the 5-degree range considered effective for a 90-minute football match is the Moon’s trine to the antiscion of Venus (Lord of the 10th house: Victory for the favourites) at 17 Sagittarius 53. Aspects involving antiscia are not conclusive, but this should give Burnley a slight advantage. Nevertheless, a draw cannot be ruled out.

29th January 2022: Peterborough United vs Sheffield United

For this weekend’s featured Championship fixture, Peterborough (currently 22nd in the table) play host to 12th-placed Sheffield United. The pundits favour Sheffield, but do the heavens agree?

As favourites, Sheffield United are signified by the Sun (Lord of the 1st House) and Venus (Lord of the 10th House; victory for the favourites). Their hosts, Peterborough, are represented by the ruler of the opposing 7th house (Saturn) and also by Mars (Lord of the 4th House; victory for the underdogs).

Saturn, for Peterborough, is strong in his own sign of Capricorn, but at over 4 degrees distant from the 7th house cusp, he is too far away to lend his strength to their cause (in contest charts, the effective distance from a house cusp is usually 1-2 degrees).

The Moon’s application to conjunct Venus (Lord of the 10th house) looks more promising for Sheffield, but here too, the Moon has to travel almost 6 degrees to perfect the aspect (5 degrees is usually the limit of effectiveness for a 90 minute football match). However, as a conjunction from the Moon to a main significator often decides the match, it would be unwise to completely ignore this. In a chart lacking any other significant testimonies, this powerful aspect may be enough to award Sheffield the match, with their best opportunities likely to occur in the latter stages of the game, or during extra time.
