In John Frawley’s system for forecasting contest charts, the home team cannot always be considered the favourites: So it is with this Sunday’s match at Old Trafford, where the pundits favour visitors Liverpool to win.   

As favourites, Liverpool are represented by Jupiter, ruler of the 1^st house and Venus, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites).   

Hosts Manchester United are designated by Mercury, ruler of the opposing 7^th house and Mars, ruler of the 4^th house.   

Jupiter (lord 1, for Liverpool) rests exactly on the cusp of the 7^th house, dominating the fortunes of their opponents, Manchester United.  This is a powerful testimony in favour of Liverpool.   

The Moon applies to a sextile to Mars (lord of the 4^th house, the house of victory for the underdogs).  This offers a ray of hope for Manchester United.  As the Moon must travel almost to the limit of the 5-degree orb considered most effective for 90-minute football match, this aspect suggests a late opportunity for Manchester United, most likely in the latter stages of the game.  

With one testimony for each team, the match may prove more equal than the pundits expect.   

The heavens agree that Liverpool are the stronger team:  Jupiter’s domination of the 7^th house cusp is a powerful testimony for the favourites, which is likely to give them the edge.  

Nevertheless, there will be one significant opportunity for Manchester United:  Much will depend on whether they are able to take advantage of a chance which comes their way in the closing stages of the match.

Despite Aston Villa having the home advantage, the pundits consider Arsenal the most likely victors at Villa Park.  But do the heavens agree? 

As the favourites, Arsenal have Saturn, ruler of the 1^st house, as their main significator. Mars, the ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) is their co-significator.  

The ruler of the 7^th house would usually represent their opponents.  However, in this chart, the Moon ruler of the 7^th house, already has an important role describing how the events of the match will unfold.  Because of this, Venus, the Moon’s dispositor, steps in as significator for Aston Villa.   

The Moon’s only aspect (over the 5-degree orb considered most effective for 90-minute football matches) is a trine to the Part of Fortune at 12 Virgo 17.  This favours the favourites.  If the pundits are correct about their choice of favourite, Arsenal should have cause to celebrate this Saturday.

According to the pundits, Manchester United are favourites to win this opening game of the Premier League season:  They are signified by Saturn, ruler of the 1^st house and Jupiter (ruler of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites). 

Fulham are represented by the Sun (7^th house ruler) and Mercury (ruler of the 4^th house, the house of victory for the underdogs).   

In this case, the pundits and the heavens are in accord:  The Moon, who describes the progress of events during the game, applies to sextile retrograde Saturn, a powerful testimony for the favourites, Manchester United.   

The Sun (lord of the 7^th house) is strongly placed in his own sign of Leo, indicating that Fulham will prove strong opposition. 

However, the Moon’s applying sextile to Saturn being the more significant testimony, United fans should have cause to celebrate, and renewed hope for this new season.

With the Moon (lord 7) already busy with her role describing the events of the match, the Moon’s dispositor (Mars) steps in as main significator for the underdogs.  They also have Venus (lord of the 4^th house, as their co-significator.   

Mars is placed in the 4^th house, very near the 4th house cusp, a sign that the least favoured team will bring their A-game to this match.   

The Moon’s aspects also favour the underdogs:   She applies first to square Venus (lord 4), a powerful testimony in their favour.  She next squares the antiscion of Mars (again for the underdogs) at 04 Leo 14.   

As this is the final lunar aspect over the 5-degree orb considered most effective for 90-minute football matches, these aspects hint at victory for the least favoured team.   

At the time of writing, Spain has the better odds to win (even the English bookies agree they are the favourites), so this chart suggests that England may have cause to celebrate tonight.  As no lunar aspects go just beyond the 5-degree limit (to around 5.5 to 6 degrees), we may even be spared extra time or penalties.

Saturn (lord 1) and Mars (lord 10) represent the favourites, and Mercury (dispositor of and substitute for the Moon, lord 7) and Venus (lord 4) signify their rivals.   

The Moon, which describes the flow of events during the match, applies to oppose retrograde Saturn. This is a positive testimony in favour of the favourites.  As this is the only testimony of note in this chart, the favourites are likely to win.   

The most difficult puzzle in this chart is determining who the favourites actually are.  The English bookies tip England to win, but realistically, there may be very little to choose between England and the Netherlands, who seem equally matched. 

The decisive nature of the lunar opposition with Saturn should at least spare both sides the anxiety of a penalty shootout, although the result is likely to be decided in the latter stages of the game.

On to the Euro semi-finals: Spain are widely tipped to win, but do the heavens agree? 

As favourites, Spain have Saturn (lord 1) and Mars (lord 10) as their significators.  

Mercury, dispositor of the Moon (lord 7) steps in as main significator for France, with Venus (lord 4) as their co-significator.  

The antiscion of Mercury (at 18 Taurus 24) is close to the cusp of the 4^th house (the house of victory for the underdogs): This confirms the French will be on fine form.    

Mars (lord 10) is placed in the 4^th house, showing Spain’s hopes of victory lie in the power of France. Ideally, Mars would be closer to the 4^th house cusp (within 2 degrees), but this is another hopeful sign for Les Bleus.  

If the pundits are correct in naming Spain as the favourites, this chart inclines towards victory for France.  

The Moon, whose job describing the flow of events takes precedence over her role as lord 7, applies to a square with the antiscion of Venus (lord 4) at 02 Gemini 20. This is only a minor testimony in support of France, but in a chart with so few other testimonies, this may tip the result in their favour.

If the pundits are to be believed, England are the clear favourites. However, it is very difficult to get unbiased odds on England in the United Kingdom and both teams have done equally well in their respective groups, currently having 5 points each.   

Mars (lord 1) and Mercury (lord 10) represent the favourites, whilst Venus (lord 7) is the sole significator for their opponents:  Jupiter (lord of the 4^th house, the house of victory for the underdogs) is already spoken for as the dispositor of the Part of Fortune.    

In this chart, the Moon immediately applies to a conjunction with Venus (lord 7), favouring the underdogs.  In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley notes that bodily conjunctions from the Moon to a main significator often determine the final result. 

If England truly are the favourites, this is very good news for Switzerland, who are enjoying a fortunate year, having already swept the board at the Eurovision Song Contest.   

The opposition between the Part of Fortune and her dispositor, Jupiter is separating but may act as a supporting testimony, again favouring the underdogs.   

Although Saturn is dispositor of the Part of Fortune, his role as lord of the 1^st house and chief significator for the favourites, the Netherlands, takes precedence.   

Mars, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) is their co-significator.   

The Moon’s role describing the events of the match outranks any other commitments, so her dispositor usually steps in as substitute. However, here the Moon rules the 7^th house and is in her own sign of Cancer, and therefore has no dispositor.  This leaves Turkey with just one planet, the lord of the 4^th house, Venus. 

There are few strong testimonies in this chart, suggesting that the status quo will be maintained with a victory for the favourites.  

The Part of Fortune makes a sextile to her dispositor, Saturn (Saturn is retrograde so this aspect is applying).  Only conjunctions and oppositions between the Part of Fortune and her dispositor work with reliability, so this is (at best) a minor testimony in favour of the favourites.   

Mars (ruler of the 10^th house) is captured within the 4^th house, showing the Netherland’s hopes of victory under the control of Turkey.  However, Mars is not close enough to the 4^th house cusp (an aspect of 2 degrees or under is preferred) so this testimony is also unreliable.   

Overall, this chart inclines towards victory for the favourites (the Netherlands) but Turkey will make them work hard for it!

There is just one significator for each team in this contest chart for Spain vs Germany.  

Both teams finished top of their group, Spain with 9 points and 3 wins to their credit and Germany with 7 points and 2 wins.   

Spain, having done better in their group, are the likeliest candidates for favourites, although the teams seem evenly matched, and Germany have the home advantage.   

The favourites (probably Spain) are signified by Jupiter, ruler of the 1^st house. Jupiter also rules the 4^th house (for Germany) but his role as lord of the 1^st house takes precedence.   

Their rivals Germany are represented by Mercury, the ruler of the opposing 7^th house.  Mercury also rules the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) but his role as lord of the 7^th house again takes precedence.   

The location of the Part of Fortune corresponds to the Moon’s phase, so will be the same at that same point every lunar month.  For this reason, the bodily placement of the Part of Fortune is not significant to the result in contest charts.   

However, the position of the antiscion of the Part of Fortune is more variable as it is dependent on the Moon’s sign.  Because of this, the placement of the antiscion of the Part of Fortune can be of great importance to the result.   

At 02 Sagittarius 59, the antiscion of the Part of Fortune is just inside the cusp of the 1^st house, favouring the favourites.     

However, the antiscion of Pluto (at 18 Scorpio 44) conjuncts the Part of Fortune.  As Pluto is currently retrograde, this is an applying aspect.  Pluto’s grudge against the favourites means this conjunction lends strong support to the cause of Germany.    

With two balanced testimonies, one favouring each team, this will be an evenly matched contest.  The biggest challenge will be working out which team truly are the favourites, as both teams are on strong form.   

The antiscion of the Part of Fortune strongly favours a victory for the favourites.  However, the power of Pluto (against the favourites) cannot be underestimated:  It is likely that the result will be decided in extra time or through penalties.   

The betting odds favour a win for France, but Portugal’s recent form (currently top of group F compared to France’s second place in group D) suggests this could be a closer game than anticipated.   

Saturn (lord 1) signifies the favourites, with Mars (lord of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites) as their co-significator.

The Moon applies to a trine with Mars, the ruler of the 10^th house which inclines to a win for the favourites. The Moon must travel just outside the 5-degree orb most effective for 90-minute football matches, suggesting that this match, as with the earlier game between Spain and Germany, will be resolved in extra time (and possibly by penalties).

Chart cast for BST

Austria finished top of their group, whilst Turkey came second to Portugal in theirs.  The pundits favour Austria: As favourites, they are represented by Saturn (lord of the 1^st house).

Mars (ruler of the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites) would usually be Austria’s co-significator, but already has another role as dispositor of the Part of Fortune.  

The Moon (lord 7) is already busy describing the events of the match, so rivals Turkey are signified by Mercury (dispositor of the Moon, ruler of the 7^th house) and Venus, ruler of the 4^th house.   

Placed at 00 Leo 26, Mercury applies to oppose the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 04 Aquarius 00). Although it is the dispositor of the 7th house which is aspected, this is a powerful testimony for favourites Austria.

The only corresponding testimony in favour of Turkey is the conjunction of Pluto with the antiscion of the Part of Fortune: John Frawley observes in his book ‘Sports Astrology’ that Pluto often appears to have a grudge against the favourites. However, Pluto is retrograde, and separating from the conjunction, so this aspect may not be able to lend much support to Turkey’s cause.  

The opposition between Mercury and the antiscion of the Part of Fortune is likely to give Austria the edge, but it would be a mistake to underestimate Turkey in this match, with or without support from Pluto.
