Favourites France are signified by the Sun (Lord of the 1^st house) and Venus (Lord of the 10^th house). Rivals England are represented by Saturn, Lord of the opposing 7^th house and Mars, Lord of the 4^th house.  

Mars applies retrograde to conjunct the antiscion of the Moon at 13 Gemini 27: This is a positive testimony for England. Not as powerful as if Mars applied to a bodily conjunction with the Moon, which is one of the strongest guarantees of victory, but fortunate, nonetheless. 

The conjunction of the Part of Fortune with its dispositor, Jupiter, is a correspondingly fortunate testimony for France. This testimony would be stronger if Jupiter were applying to conjunct the Part of Fortune rather than separating, but it is still powerful.  

This is a balanced chart – time will tell if it translates into a similarly balanced game. However, there must be a winner; a draw will not suffice. The Mars-Moon aspect is applying, rather than separating, which should make it slightly stronger than the separating conjunction between Jupiter and the Part of Fortune: England may possibly win, but the match will be close.

Next, the Moon applies to conjunct the 1^st house cusp: This is a tremendous boost for Brazil and will be a difficult testimony to beat. Especially as Jupiter, (Lord 10) is strongly placed in his own sign and house, if slightly too far from the house cusp to guarantee victory.  

In combination, the testimonies of the Moon and Jupiter should add up to a win for Brazil, but Croatia will be determined not to make victory easy for them.

On to the Round of 16, and Saturday’s match between the Netherlands and the USA. The pundits favour the Netherlands to win, but what do the heavens say? 

The Moon (Lord of the 1^st house) already has a role describing the progress of events during the match, so another significator must be found for the favourites: The Moon’s dispositor, Mars, is called from the substitute’s bench to represent the Netherlands. They are awarded Jupiter, Lord of the 10^th house (victory for the favourites) as co-significator.

Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, describes their rivals, the USA. They are also represented by Mercury, Lord of the 4^th house as co-significator.  

There are two strong testimonies in this chart. First, the Moon applies to sextile Saturn (Lord 7). Secondly, Saturn applies to conjunct the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 21 Aquarius 56): Both these testimonies support the USA, suggesting that they will do much better than the pundits expect.

As favourites, Portugal are awarded the 1^st house and its ruler, the Sun.  The 10^th house and its ruler Venus act as their co-significators. 

Opponents Uruguay are described by Saturn and Mars, rulers of the 7^th and 4^th houses respectively.  

Saturn is strongly placed, in his own sign of Aquarius (traditional rulership) and just inside the 7^th house:  Uruguay can be expected to play consistently well during this match.  

The Moon first applies to sextile Venus, Lord of the 10^th house (victory for the favourites).  This is a very positive testimony for Portugal and may be enough to win them the match.   

The Moon next applies to conjunct Saturn and the 7^th house cusp. This might be a winning testimony for Uruguay, if the aspect were closer:  At over 7 degrees, the orb before this aspect perfects cannot be considered close enough to guarantee success (5 degrees is considered the limit for a 90-minute football match), but the longer the match strays into extra time, the better Uruguay’s chances will look.

Pisces rises, so Jupiter (traditional ruler of the Pisces) represents favourites Japan. Jupiter in his own sign, placed very close to the 1^st house cusp, promises a strong performance from the favourites, especially now Neptune is too far from the 1st house cusp to cause mischief.

However, it the aspect of the Moon which gives the clue to the result: Applying to sextile Jupiter, this is another favourable sign for Japan. At just over 6 degrees for the aspect to perfect, it is possible that the best opportunities will arise for them in extra time.

In the absence of any equivalent testimonies for Mercury, representing Costa Rica, victory for Japan seems the most likely outcome.

Placed 26^th to Saudi Arabia’s 51^st, Poland are expected to win this match.  

As favourites, they are described by Venus (Lord 1) and Saturn (Lord 10).  

Their opponents Saudi Arabia are awarded Mars (Lord 7) and the Sun (Lord 4). 

The Moon applies to sextile the antiscion of Saturn (at 10 Scorpio 25), a moderately favourable testimony for Poland.  

This is the only aspect of note for this chart, making Poland the likely winners*  

*Note that the Moon separates from an opposition with the Part of Fortune which would favour Saudi Arabia, if the aspect were not already in the past. Mars (Lord 7) in closer conjunction with the Part of Fortune would also favour Saudi Arabia, were it not already too distant (2 degrees orb is usually considered most effective for contest charts).

Tunisia, as favourites, are awarded the 1^st and 10^th houses, both ruled by Jupiter in his own sign of Pisces (traditional rulership). Pisces is in the 1^st house, giving a boost to the favourites (although this would be more beneficial if he was closer to the cusp). 

Rivals Australia are signified by Mercury, Ruler of the opposing 7^th and 4^th houses. Mercury applies to the 10^th house cusp (victory and success) but is too far away for this to be an effective testimony. 

This chart is very similar to that of Argentina vs Saudi Arabia, which produced a shock win for Saudi Arabia, with Argentina expecting an easy victory.  

However, there is one crucial difference: In the Argentina vs Saudi Arabia chart, Neptune (who Astrologer John Frawley observes often has a grudge against the favourites) was applying retrograde to conjunct the 1^st house cusp. Here, Neptune is still retrograde, but separating from the 1^st house cusp. This should lessen his potential for sabotage.  

With Neptune moving out of the picture, and the support of Jupiter, this chart appears to favour Tunisia.  

There is a footnote: Although the Moon makes no aspect to either Jupiter, Mercury or the Part of Fortune over the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match, there is an aspect beyond this orb, when the Moon conjuncts the antiscion of Mercury at 15 Capricorn 58. The longer the match strays into extra time, the greater Australia’s chances improve.

England are favourites for this Group B match, but USA are in great form and could prove formidable opponents: What do the stars say about the outcome? 

As favourites, England are represented by the Sun (Lord 1) and Venus (Lord 10, victory for the favourites).  

Rivals USA are awarded the rulers of the opposing houses, Saturn (Lord 7) and Mars (Lord 4).  

The North and South Nodes are placed close to the cusps of the 10^th and 4^th houses, but house placement of the Nodes seems less important in contest charts than their conjunctions with planetary significators. In any case. The Nodes are retrograde, and separating from the house cusps, not applying to them. 

The placement of Uranus, moving retrograde onto the 10^th house cusp is a more important testimony. John Frawley notes in his book “Sports Astrology” that this strongly favours the favourites, so this is a boon for England.  

Saturn lends powerful support to the USA; placed in his own sign (traditional rulership) and close to the 7^th house cusp, he promises a strong performance, which England would be unwise to underestimate.  

Of these two testimonies, Uranus is potentially the stronger, although in contest charts he is notoriously inconsistent in his effects. If he turns out to support England, it is well within his power to award them victory.  

The USA will produce a reliably strong performance throughout the game, whilst England’s play may be less consistent, but characterised by flashes of brilliance.

The Moon immediately applies to conjunction with Venus (Lord 1); a clear testimony of victory for the favourites. Astrologer John Frawley observes that lunar conjunctions are usually final in contest charts and are strong enough to give the result by themselves, without support from any other testimonies. If this rule holds true today, the favourites will surely win. But who are they? 

The pundits favour Uruguay, placed 14^th in the FIFA World Rankings, compared to South Korea’s 28^th. They have won the tournament in the past and are one of the favourites to do well in their Group: Victory seems likely for La Celeste.  

South Korea, placed 2^nd to Japan in this year’s EAFF E-1 Championship may not go into this match as favourites but will be determined not to let Uruguay dominate the game, especially as it is now believed that Son Heung-min will be fit enough to play.  

Even if the heavens believe the result is a foregone conclusion, this match promises to be one of the highlights of today’s schedule. Both teams should play well, and discerning football fans will enjoy watching their progress through the tournament.
