Chart is cast for 20:30 (EDT; Eastern Daylight Time) 

The Boston Celtics are favoured to win this opening game of the NBA finals: As favourites they are signified by the 1^st house and its ruler, Jupiter. 

Venus, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) is co-significator for the Celtics. 

Mercury, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, represents the Dallas Mavericks. They also have Mars, ruler of the 4^th house, as their co-significator.   

The Moon placed just inside the 7^th house is a fortunate testimony for the Mavericks:  In contest charts, the Moon describes how the events of the game will unfold.  Placed in a team’s house, the Moon shows that that team will have considerable influence over the result.  Ideally, the Moon should be closer to the 7^th house cusp (within 1-2 degrees) but this is a powerful testimony for the Mavericks, nonetheless.  

The North Node on the cusp of the 4^th house (for the Mavericks) is another testimony in their favour, just as the South Node on the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) afflicts the fortunes of the Celtics.   

The Moon applies to oppose the Part of Fortune, which John Frawley notes in his book “Sports Astrology” favours the underdogs (in this case, the Mavericks).   

So far, we have three testimonies which support the Mavericks.  Does this chart hold any good news for the Celtics? 

Venus, ruler of the 10^th house, is on the cusp of the 7^th house, but a little too far away to make much difference.  If Venus had been closer (within 1-2 degrees), this would have shown the Celtics dominating the match.  It is still a sign that they will play well and prove strong opposition to the Maverick’s ambitions, but will it be enough to win? 

The Moon’s final aspect, a sextile to Mars, suggests not:  Mars rules the 4^th house (the house of victory for the underdogs, the Mavericks).  This last aspect of the Moon, together with all the other testimonies in their favour, forecast a win for the Mavericks.

COMING SOON: Astrological Football Forecasts for UEFA EURO 2024

It is widely believed that Manchester City, already League victors, will win this year’s F.A. Cup, beating their rivals Manchester United to the trophy for the second year in a row. But do the heavens agree? 

As clear favourites, City are signified by Venus, ruler of the 1^st house. Venus is their sole significator in this match: The Moon (ruler of the 10th house, the house of victory for the favourites) already has an important role describing the progress of events.  

Mars, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, represents United. They also have Saturn, ruler of the 4^th house, as their co-significator. 

The Moon is not void of course (which would, by preserving the status quo) have favoured the favourites, Manchester City. This is because the Moon makes one final aspect in her current sign of Sagittarius; a square to Neptune.  

This is Neptune’s sole contribution to the match: As Neptune is in Pisces, a different sign to that on the 7^th house cusp (Aries) should not be able to afflict the fortunes of United. However, the prominence of Neptune (planet of mystery, illusion and delusion) in the chart suggests that this match may contain some unexpectedly disruptive events.  

The Moon applies to the 4^th house cusp, which would be a positive sign for underdogs United, were it not for that inconvenient square to Neptune. However, the antiscion of the Moon at 00 Capricorn 06 is placed even closer to the 4^th house cusp: Although this does not guarantee victory for United, it is a positive sign that they will prove stronger opponents than expected.  

Mars (for United) applies to conjunct the Part of Fortune. The orb is quite wide (over 7 degrees) but this is another slightly positive testimony for the underdogs.  

What can this chart tell us about the fortunes of City? Venus, their sole significator, is afflicted by combustion (being within 8.5 degrees of the Sun). In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley proposes that the effective orb for contest charts should be around 2 degrees. Venus is just outside this orb, but is moving closer to the Sun. This is a severe affliction, which could hinder the performance of the favourites.  

To sum up we have two mildly positive testimonies for Manchester United, and one potentially severe affliction for Manchester City.  

Manchester City have done so well this season that it seems unlikely that they will lose this final. However, stranger things have happened in football.  

What can be said for certain is that United will play better than expected, and City’s performance will be lacking. Whether this is enough to cause a major upset remains to be seen.

According to the pundits, Nigeria are favourites to win, but the odds are very close.  

As favourites, Nigeria are represented by Mercury, ruler of the 1st and 10^th houses. 

Hosts Ivory Coast are signified by Jupiter, ruler of the 7^th and 4^th houses.  

The Moon makes a conjunction to Saturn, which does not signify, as Saturn represents neither team. 

The next lunar aspect is a sextile to Jupiter, which favours Ivory Coast.  

If the pundits are correct, and Nigeria are the favourites, the Moon’s aspect to Jupiter boosts the fortunes of their opponents; Ivory Coast.  

This aspect occurs almost at the limit of the 5-degrees considered most effective for a 90-minute football match, a sign that Ivory Coast will gain a significant advantage in the latter stages of the gain which will bring victory for the host nation.

The 49ers are considered the favourites to win. However, the odds for both teams are very close, and it would be a mistake to underestimate the Chiefs.

What do the heavens say? 

The Sun ruler of the 1^st house signifies the favourites, whilst their rivals are represented by Saturn, traditional ruler of Aquarius, the sign on the cusp of the 7^th house.  

Mars, ruler of the 10^th house (house of victory for the favourites) is co-significator for the 49ers, and Venus, ruler of the 4^th house is co-significator for the Chiefs.  

Important Note*: If the kickoff of the game is delayed by longer than 36 minutes (this is not beyond the bounds of possibility), the sign on the cusps of the 10^th and 4^th houses change from Aries to Taurus (10^th house) and Libra to Scorpio (4^th house). If this happens, the planetary rulerships will switch from Mars to Venus (for the 49ers) and Venus to Mars (for the Chiefs).  *Thanks, Shaun, for drawing my attention to the possibility of lengthy late kickoffs in NFL matches, which can have quite an impact!

Pluto is placed directly on the cusp of the 7^th house, opposing the cusp of the 1^st house. John Frawley has observed that Pluto has a grudge against the favourites. Here, his allegiance is clear: He lends his support to the Chiefs and stands against the 49ers. This is a noteworthy testimony in favour of the Chiefs, although it is dependent on the match starting on time.  

The North and South Nodes are a little too far from the 10^th and 4^th house cusps to help or harm the cause of either team.  

The only lunar aspect of note (within the 5-degree orb considered most effective in American Football) is a sextile to Venus. This aspect also favours the Chiefs (unless the kick-off is 36 minutes late or over, in which case it boosts the fortunes of the 49ers).  

The heavens agree that the Chiefs will offer strong opposition. In the absence of a late kick-off (which will move Pluto away from the house cusp), Pluto’s affliction of the 1^st house cusp may give them edge.

Timing will be crucial to the result of this game.  

The lunar aspect to Venus looks likely to decide the match in favour of the Chiefs. However, if the match starts 36 minutes late or over, this advantage transfers to the 49ers.

DR Congo have won the third-place playoff twice before, in the 1998 and 2015 tournaments. Can they secure third place for a third time? The pundits think so: At the time of writing, the betting odds favour a win for the Leopards. As favourites DR Congo are signified by Mercury, ruler of the 1^st and 10^th houses. 

Jupiter, ruler of the 7^th and 4^th houses represent rivals South Africa.  

There is only one testimony of note: An applying sextile from the Moon to Jupiter (for South Africa). This aspect is almost at the 5-degree limit considered effective for a 90-minute football match, suggesting that, after a hard-fought game, South Africa will gain the advantage in the latter stages of the match.

As odds-on favourites, Nigeria would usually represented by the 1^st house and its ruler. However, the Moon (1^st house ruler) already has a role describing the flow of events, so her dispositor, Mars steps forward from the substitute’s bench as significator for the favourites.  

Mars also rules the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) and so is Nigeria’s sole significator for this game.  

Their opponents Angola are signified by Saturn, ruler of the 7^th house and Venus, ruler of the 4^th house.  

The Moon applies to square Venus: Despite the challenging nature of the square aspect, this is very favourable for Angola.  

In the absence of any other significant testimonies, Angola can be expected to do better than the pundits have predicted, and Nigeria will have to work hard for their place in the Semi-finals.

However, in a contest chart for a football tournament, where there must be a deciding result, the interpretation of a void of course Moon is slightly different: As the Moon describes the flow of events, a void of course Moon often indicates that things will stay as they are: The status quo will be maintained, which usually favours the favourites.

In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley notes that aspects from the Moon to the Part of Fortune or its antiscion are usually conclusive: This aspect from the Moon to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune should advance Egypt to the next round, although it will be with regret that we see DR Congo knocked out of the competition as The Leopards have enriched this tournament by playing some excellent football.
