9th October 2021: Switzerland vs Northern Ireland

When these teams last met on the field of battle (a month ago at Windsor Park) they fought to a goalless draw:  This Saturday’s Group C World Cup European Qualifier looks set to be equally close.

Placed 2nd in the Group Table, with two wins to their credit, hosts Switzerland are the favourites and are awarded the 1st House and its ruler, Mercury.

Northern Ireland, whose impressive performance at Windsor Park held Switzerland to a draw, are just behind them in the Table at 3rd place.  As rivals to the favourites, they are signified by the opposing 7th house and its ruler Jupiter.

Mercury, for Switzerland, is retrograde and combust (very close to the Sun).  A retrograde planet is not usually hindered in contest charts, but combustion is a severe debility.  Balanced against this, the benefic North Node applies retrograde to conjunct the 1st House cusp.

Northern Ireland must contend with the pernicious effects of the South Node applying to the 7th House cusp, but also receive a significant boost from the Moon’s placement just inside the 7th House.  Sometimes, the Moon’s placement just inside a team’s house is enough to win them the match, but the impending Lunar Eclipse may diminish the power of this positive testimony.

So we have one positive and one negative testimony for each team:  A closely fought match seems likely.  Can the Moon’s aspects throw any light on a possible winner?

The Moon applies to a retrograde Saturn, ruler of the 10th House (victory for the favourites).  This is very fortunate for hosts Switzerland.

Another close game is indicated, with a win for the home team the most likely outcome.  The approaching Lunar Eclipse could throw in some unpredictability so expect the unexpected!

19th September 2021: West Ham vs Manchester United

In his book “Sports Astrology”, John Frawley advocates using the 1st House and its ruler to describe the favourites and the opposing 7th house for the underdogs.  Following this system, visitors Manchester United (currently top of the Table and hotly tipped for victory) are signified by Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, while Mercury as ruler of the 7th house, represents hosts West Ham.

Mercury is placed in the 10th house of victory.  This is potentially a position of great strength, but Mercury is placed a little too far from the house cusp for West Ham to truly benefit.

More significant is the Moon’s immediate trine to Venus. Venus’ role as dispositor of the Part of Fortune takes precedence over her rulership of the 10th house, but either way this aspect favours Manchester United.

With no other significant aspects within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match, Manchester United look set to continue their currant dominance of the Premier League.

11th September 2021: Crystal Palace vs Tottenham Hotspur

Despite their being the visiting team, Tottenham are the favourites, and are expected to win decisively.  But do the heavens agree?

The Moon (who often decides the winner in contest charts) seems to concur:  She applies first to conjunct the 1st house cusp which represents the favourites – a very fortunate sign for Spurs.

The Moon’s next aspect, a trine to the Part of Fortune, again favours Spurs.

In contrast, there is little in the chart to support Crystal Palace.  As the underdogs, they are firstly described by the opposing 7th house and its ruler Venus.

The Moon makes no aspect to Venus, but she does apply to square Jupiter which, as Lord of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs), is a secondary significator for Palace.

The Moon must travel almost 7 degrees to perfect her aspect with Jupiter.  Unlike the International game, where extra time is practically guaranteed (allowing for more leeway) this is beyond the 5 degrees usually considered effective for a Premiership football match. Nevertheless, Palace should look out for opportunities in the latter stages of the game.   These will give them the best chance of a goal, although it is unlikely the most probable result, a Spurs victory.

29th August 2021: Burnley vs Leeds

Although Leeds, currently placed in the table at 15th to Burnley’s 17th, are the bookies’ favourites, the chart for this match promises a closer game than the odds might suggest.

As favourites, Leeds are awarded the 1st house and its ruler Mars.  Mars is conjunct the Midheaven:  As the 10th house represents victory in general, and success for the favourites in particular, this is a very strong testimony in favour of a win for Leeds.

The Moon’s final (and only) aspect is a trine to Mercury.  As Mercury rules the 10th house of victory for the favourites, this is a further argument in favour of Leeds fans having something to celebrate.

But the Moon’s placement hints at a different story.  Placed just inside the 7th house which represents the underdogs, this is like a big surge of energy and encouragement directed towards Burnley:  Perhaps the home crowd will boost their spirits and inspire them to give Leeds a run for their money.  Without this placement of the Moon, this chart would indicate a straightforward win for Leeds.  However, with the Moon’s assistance, Burnley are likely to prove much more of a challenge.

The most likely outcome is a Leeds win, but a draw should not be ruled out.

Shooting Stars: 22nd August 2021 Arsenal vs Chelsea

The Moon first applies to trine the antiscion of Jupiter (at 03 Scorpio 07):  Jupiter is Lord of the 1st house, so this signifies an advantage for the favourites.

The Moon’s trine to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 06 Cancer 31) is another positive testimony for the favourites and, together with the Moon’s previous trine to the antiscion of Jupiter augurs more than one goal.

The Part of Fortune just inside the cusp of the 7th house may look like a positive testimony for the underdogs, but as this will be the same for all games which kick off during this Moon’s phase it is unlikely to signify.

The Moon will eventually aspect Mercury (Lord 7) by opposition, but at 17 degrees distant, this aspect is too wide to be relevant to this match.

Overall the chart inclines (weakly) to support the favourites.  The greatest challenge will be deciding who the favourites are.  Chelsea (the bookmakers’ choice) currently reside 2nd in the table while Arsenal, who lost to Premiership newcomers Brentford, are 17th.  But Arsenal were unbeaten in their last three Premiership games against Chelsea and are more than capable of giving them a run for their money.  Expect a more eventful game than this chart suggests.

The Premiership is back! 15th August 2021 Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City

Still reeling from their shock defeat last weekend, when Leicester City dashed their hopes of Community Shield victory in the 89th minute, will Manchester City be able to rally to victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?  Or will their hosts be celebrating the start of the new season with a home win?

Tottenham are the home team, but at the time of writing Manchester City are the bookie’s favourites.  Following John Frawley’s method of forecasting, the favourites are awarded the 1st house and its ruler:  Therefore, Manchester City are represented by Jupiter, ruler of the rising sign, Sagittarius.  Venus being ruler of the 10th house (which usually represents victory for the favourites), is their co-significator.

Rivals Spurs are awarded the opposing 7th house and its ruler Mercury.  Their fortunes are also somewhat represented by the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) and its ruler Mars.

The Part of Fortune just inside the 4th house augurs well for Spurs but would be better were it closer to the 4th house cusp.  At just over 3 degrees distant, the aspect is not strong enough to guarantee a win – even before the Moon’s aspects are considered.

With an applying square to Jupiter (Lord 1) followed by a final sextile to Venus (Lord 10, victory for the favourites), the Moon casts her vote firmly in favour of Manchester City.

Expect goals for both teams but, because the Moon’s final aspect often indicates the victor, a likely win for Manchester City.

Euro 2020 Day 21: 11th July 2021

European Championship Final: Italy vs England

(Chart cast for BST: GMT+1)

Delayed by a year, these long-anticipated European Championships have been worth the wait:  Every team in the competition has given their all, proving their right to a place in the tournament.  Supporters of every participating nation should be justifiably proud of their teams.

Today at Wembley there is much at stake:  Will it be third time lucky for Italy after finishing runners-up to France in 2000 and again to Spain in 2012?  Or will England win their first major international competition since their famed World Cup victory of 1966?

In this system of prediction, the 1st house is awarded to the favourites and the underdogs are represented by the opposing 7th house.  For this astrologer (writing from the U.K.) the biggest challenge is determining who the favourites truly are:  In this case, bookmakers are less help than usual, as home supporters always skew the betting in favour of a hoped-for win for England.

Both teams finished at the top of their groups, with Italy on 9 points and England on 7:  Italy have won all their games, while England drew their match with Scotland.  Based on match results alone, Italy are favourites, if only by a small margin.

If Italy are truly the favourites, as their win record suggests, they are represented by 1st house ruler Saturn, strong in his own sign of Aquarius.  Saturn is retrograde, which does not seem to be a hindrance in contest charts, especially here as it will hasten his opposition to the Moon, signifying at least one goal for Italy, (and potentially an early lead for the favourites).

Cancer being the sign on the cusp of the 7th house, ruler the Moon should represent England.  But the Moon’s role as significator of events supersedes any house rulership, so her dispositor the Sun is called from the substitute’s bench to play for The Three Lions.

After her opposition to Saturn, the Moon applies to sextile the antiscion of the Sun at 10 Gemini 19. Although less reliable than a bodily aspect to the Sun, this should signify a goal for England.

For her next aspect (to Venus, Lord of the 4th house, victory for the underdogs) the Moon must travel beyond the 5-6 degrees usually considered the limits of her influence for a 90-minute football match.  But with extra time more probability than possibility, this augurs another goal for England.  John Frawley states that bodily conjunctions from the Moon can be strong enough to decide the match (Sports Astrology p86).  He also states that Pluto conjunct the Part of Fortune (as he is here), favours the underdog.  These are two very positive testimonies in favour of England.

Note, however, the Moon’s next aspect:  Another powerful conjunction, this time to Mars (Lord of the 10th house, victory for the favourites). This should signify another goal for Italy and augurs a very close game:  Like their namesake lions, England will have to fiercely guard any advantage from a formidable Italy.  Extra time, especially the closing few minutes of the match, could prove especially perilous to England’s hopes.

Euro 2020 Day 20: 7th July 2021

England vs Denmark

Chart is set for BST (GMT+1)

The last time these teams met competitively, in the World Cup 2002 Round of 16, England were the victors by 3 goals to nil.

But of the two, only Denmark can lay claim to winning the Euros, beating Germany 2-0 at Gothenburg in 1992.

England have twice made it to the Euro semi-finals, in 1968 and 1996, but have yet to hold the European Cup aloft.  Will today’s match see them through to the Final, or will Denmark be the team travelling to Wembley on 11th July?

In the U.K., the odds at the bookies are hopelessly skewed in favour of a home win.  National bias notwithstanding, the Lions finished top of Group D and have yet to lose a match, winning four and drawing one, the 0-0 stalemate against Scotland at Wembley.  Putting betting to one side and considering results alone, they have earned their place as favourites and are represented by Jupiter, Lord 1.

This is unfortunate for England supporters, as Jupiter although currently well-placed in his own sign of Pisces (traditional rulership), will shortly lose strength by moving retrograde into Aquarius.  This can represent a loss of position or fall from grace, and although it did not seriously affect Italy’s performance in yesterday’s semi-final, it is a potentially negative testimony which cannot be ignored.

After a nightmare debut against Finland, when concern for their fallen teammate Christian Eriksen clearly impacted their performance, followed by a loss against tournament high-flyers Belgium, Denmark have outlasted both teams to win their place in tonight’s semi-final.

After their initial shaky start, they have gone from strength to strength.  At current form, England would be unwise to underestimate them.  They are described by Mercury, Lord of the opposing 7th house.  Mercury is strongly placed in his own sign and lends that strength to Denmark’s cause by applying directly to the 7th house cusp.

The Moon ‘s aspects also favour Denmark:  She first applies to conjunct Mercury (Lord 7) and next conjuncts the 7th house cusp.  John Frawley in his book Sports Astrology (p86) notes that a bodily conjunction from the Moon to a team’s main significator is usually enough to settle the match in their favour, but the additional conjunction of the Moon to the 7th house cusp is the icing on the cake, representing a surge of energy for Denmark which will make them formidable opponents.

The only testimony for England is the Moon’s final aspect in her current sign of Gemini, a trine to the antiscion of Jupiter (at 28 Libra 18).  The Moon’s final aspect often decides the match, but this aspect is inconclusive for several reasons:  Firstly, this is an aspect to the antiscion of Jupiter, rather than a stronger bodily aspect.  Secondly, to perfect this aspect, the Moon must travel a greater distance than the 5-6 degrees usually considered reliable for a 90-minute football match, even one where extra time is likely.  Last but by no means least, the Moon’s conjunction to Mercury (for Denmark) has the power to decide the match on its own.

As an England supporter who would dearly love to see them in the final, I have looked long and hard at this chart for signs a certain win for the home team.  But most of the best cards seem to be held by Denmark. As with the Italy vs Spain semi-final, this looks to be a very closely fought contest where England will need all their skill and tenacity to win out against an equally determined opposition.  May the best team win!
