Will favourites the Kansas City Chiefs make this their third consecutive Superbowl win or do the heavens (and opponents the Philadelphia Eagles) have other plans? 

As favourites, the Chiefs are awarded the 1^st house and its ruler.  If the game kicks off on time, the sign rising will be Leo, making the Sun the main significator for the Chiefs.  They will also be represented by Venus, ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites). 

Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, is main representative for the Philadelphia Eagles, with Mars (ruler of the 4^th house) taking the role of co-significator.   

The Sun (for the Chiefs) is very badly placed in this chart.  In the 7^th house, just below the 7^th house cusp, the Sun shows that the Eagles will have the Chiefs in their power.   

In the absence of any equally strong testimony in favour of the Chiefs, this unfortunate placement of their main significator suggests a possible upset, and cause for the Eagles to celebrate.   

However, the game may start late (a not unlikely occurrence for the Superbowl).  If the match kicks off after 18:21 PM CST (19:21 EST, 16:21 West Coast Time or 00:21 10^th February 2025 GMT) the sign rising will change from Leo to Virgo: 

Mercury will then step in as ruler of the 1^st house and main significator of the Chiefs, with Venus (ruler of the 10^th house) retaining her role as co-significator. 

Jupiter, traditional ruler of Pisces) will be the new ruler of the 7^th house and main significator of the Eagles, whilst Mars (4^th house) remains their co-significator.   

At first glance, this looks better for the Chiefs, as in this new chart, Mercury is not placed in the 7^th house, releasing the Chiefs from the power of the Eagles.   

However, Mercury is combust (within 8 degrees of the Sun), itself a serious debility.  This chart also appears to favour the fortunes of the Eagles.   

The last chart we will consider is cast for the eventuality that the game kicks off over an hour later than scheduled, at 18:31 CST, (17:31 EST, 16:31 West Coast Time and 00:31 on 10^th February 2025 GMT).   

This does not change the signs on the 1^st and 7^th house cusps (Virgo and Pisces respectively) but gives new rulers to the 10^th and 4^th houses. With Gemini on the Midheaven and Sagittarius on the 4^th house cusp, the Chiefs and the Eagles have just one planetary significator each:  Mercury for the Chiefs and Jupiter for the Eagles.   

Otherwise, little changes:  Mercury (for the Chiefs) is still combust and therefore severely debilitated.  Despite the Chiefs being widely regarded as the favourites, each of these three charts favour their opponents, the Eagles.

This chart is cast for the Premier League match between Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers, which is due to kick off at 20:00 (8pm) GMT/UST on Monday 20^th January 2025 at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea 

In John Frawley’s system for forecasting contest charts, the 1^st house and its ruler is awarded to the team considered to be the favourites. This is not necessarily the home team.    

However, in this match, hosts Chelsea enjoy both the advantage of a home crowd and the confidence of the pundits:  Despite their recent lacklustre form and current injury worries, Chelsea are placed 5^th in the Premiership to Wolves’ 17th place and are expected to win easily.  But do the heavens agree? 

In this chart, Chelsea are awarded Mercury (ruler of the 1^st house and also the 10^th house, the house of victory for the favourites).  

Jupiter, ruler of the 7^th house and the 4^th house (the house of victory for the underdogs) signifies their opponents, Wolves.   

Jupiter (for Wolves) is in the 10^th house (one of the houses representing Chelsea).  Were Jupiter nearer to the 10^th house cusp (within 2-3 degrees) this would depict Wolves in the power of Chelsea. However, even applying retrograde closer to the 10^th house cusp, Jupiter is too far away for this to signify.  

The same rules apply to the antiscion of Chelsea’s significator, Mercury:  At 11 Sagittarius 33, the antiscion of Mercury is in one of the houses representing Wolves (the 4^th house, the house of victory for the underdogs).  However, he is too far away from the house cusp for his placement to represent any serious affliction to Chelsea’s hopes for success. 

Potentially more significant is the opposition of Pluto to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 01 Leo 57).  John Frawley has observed that Pluto causes problems for the favourites, so Pluto’s opposition could represent a serious obstacle for Chelsea. 

Pluto is combust (within 8 degrees of the Sun), which is a serious affliction.  Whether this will mitigate or increase Pluto’s baleful influence remains to be seen.  Either way, it seems likely that Wolves will prove stronger opposition than the pundits expect, and a win for Chelsea is far from guaranteed.

Both teams will be seeking to improve their performance this weekend but hosts Manchester City (currently placed 4^th in the table to Manchester United’s 10^th) are the favourites to win.   

With the sign Cancer rising, the Moon rules the 1^st house cusp.  The ruler of the 1^st house cusp is usually the main significator for the favourites .  However, the Moon already has a key role describing the events of the match so her dispositor, Mercury, is summoned from the substitute’s bench as main representative for Manchester City.   

Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7^th house, is the main significator for Manchester United.  The Sun (ruler of the 4^th house; the house of victory for the underdogs) is their co-significator.   

Note:  The favourites usually have the ruler of the 10^th house (the house of victory for the favourites) as their co-significator but Saturn, ruler of the 10^th house, also rules the 7^th house and is already spoken for by Manchester United.   

The Part of Fortune in the 7^th house does not signify:  This is always the case for matches which take place around the Full Moon, but history teaches that the underdogs do not always win under such celestial conditions.   

The antiscion of the Part of Fortune is determined by sign and is therefore more significant.  At 20 Sagittarius 49, the antiscion of the Part of Fortune is near to the Sun (United’s co-significator) but the aspect is separating, so this positive testimony can be discounted.   

Neither Saturn or Mercury are in play, so the only testimony of significance is from the void of course Moon.  In horary astrology, a void of course Moon (where the Moon makes no further aspects while in her current sign) often shows a ‘stuck’ or static situation, where present conditions might be expected to continue.  In contest charts, the void of course Moon is judged slightly differently: All sporting contests must end with a final result. When the Moon is void of course, that result will reflect the status quo. No major upsets are to be expected and the team most likely to win are the favourites.

Northampton are struggling to regain their form and will be hoping for a home win to boost their table standings.  However, Peterborough have the confidence of the pundits and are tipped for victory this Monday evening.   

As favourites, Peterborough are signified by the Sun (ruler of the 1^st house) and Mars (ruler of the 10^th house; the house of victory for the favourites).   

Although they are the hosts, Northampton are not the favourites, so they have Saturn (ruler of the opposing 7^th house) and Venus (ruler of the 4^th house; the house of victory for the underdogs) as their signifying planets.   

Venus (victory for the underdogs) applies to conjunct the antiscion of the Part of Fortune at 04 Aquarius 26.  As Venus rules the 4th house and is Northampton’s co-significator, this is only a minor positive testimony for Northampton, and by no means as compelling as a conjunction between their main significator, Saturn (ruler of the 7^th house) and the antiscion of the Part of Fortune.   

The Moon’s aspects (over the 5-degree orb considered most effective for 90-minute football matches) show how events will progress:  She first applies to a sextile with the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 04 Aquarius 26); a positive testimony for the favourites.  

The next lunar aspect, a trine to Mars (significator of victory for the favourites) confirms a likely win for Peterborough.

Placed just inside the 1^st house, the Moon seems to support favourites Algeria. However, she is in Gemini; a different sign to Taurus, which rises on the 1^st house cusp, so this is a much less powerful testimony than it first appears. 

The progress of the Moon shows the flow of events: She immediately makes an opposition aspect to the antiscion of the Sun (ruler of the 4^th house) at 00 Sagittarius 01. This is an important testimony in favour of Burkina Faso.  

Next, the Moon applies to sextile the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 00 Aries 32). This is a boost to the fortunes of favourites Algeria.  

Her next aspect is a square to Saturn at 05 Pisces 10, which (as Saturn rules the 10^th house of victory for the favourites) supports Algeria.

This aspect is just over the 5-degree orb usually effective for a 90-minute football match: It points to a likely win for Algeria, who may gain an advantage in the latter stages of the game.

The contest chart for the much-anticipated final between Spain and England favours the favourites. The biggest challenge is deciding which team the favourites are: At the time of writing, the pundits lean towards a win for Spain, but support is strong for both sides. 

As favourites, Spain are awarded the 1^st house, and its ruler, Jupiter.  

Mercury, ruler of the 1^st house represents rivals England. Mercury is in Virgo, the sign of his rulership and exaltation: We can look forward to another formidable performance from the Lionesses.  

However, all other testimonies favour the favourites: The Part of Fortune (victory) is conjunct Jupiter (for Spain), whilst the Moon also lends her support to Spain’s cause with a sextile to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune at 16 Leo 31.  

If Spain are truly the favourites, they are likely to be the ones celebrating on Sunday. However, as a supporter of the Lionesses, I don’t mind admitting that I would be happier if the result favours England!
