30th October 2021: Leicester City vs Arsenal

Currently sitting side by side with equal points in the Premier League table, these teams promise a closely fought match.

In situations where the teams appear evenly matched, the most difficult task is deciding who the favourites will be.  A quick check of the bookmakers’ odds reveals that the pundits favour home side Leicester, so we award them the first house and its ruler Jupiter (22 Aquarius 34).  The visitors are given the opposing 7th house, and its ruler Mercury (20 Libra 11).

Mars, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites) and Venus, ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) are often significant too.

This is very much the case here, where Venus is placed just over 2 degrees above the cusp of the 1st house.  Placed on the cusp, and as ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) we might view this placement of Venus as positive for Arsenal, showing Leicester under attack from the visitors.

And so it would be, were it not that Venus also happens to be dispositor of the Part of Fortune.  Her role as Fortuna’s dispositor supersedes that of 4th house ruler, reversing the significance of this testimony:  Now we see victory (the Part of Fortune) smiling on the favourites, Leicester.

Mercury (7th ruler) separates from a conjunction with the Part of Fortune and, at already 4 degrees distant and moving further away, is too weak a testimony to help Arsenal’s cause (had the aspect been applying, it might have been a different matter!)

In contest charts, the Moon’s final aspect is often conclusive.  Here, her sole (and last) aspect is a sextile to Mars who, as ruler of the 10th house, points to victory for the favourites.

Provided the pundits are accurate in their assessment, and Leicester truly are the favourites, this should result in a win for the home side.

24th October 2021: Manchester United vs Liverpool

Visitors Liverpool, currently placed 2nd in the table, are hotly tipped for victory at Old Trafford this Sunday.  But do the heavens agree?

As favourites, Liverpool are represented by Jupiter, the 1st house ruler at 22 Aquarius 23.  Hosts Manchester United, the underdogs, are awarded the opposing 7th house and ruler Mercury at 13 Libra 09.

The antiscion of Mercury (at 16 Pisces 50) is placed just inside the 1st house.  This shows the underdogs in the power of the favourites.  Although not as strong a testimony than if Mercury occupied the 1st house by bodily placement, this is still an unfavorable testimony for Manchester United.

The Moon describes how events unfold during the match:  She applies to trine Jupiter, a strongly positive testimony for the favourites, which should award victory to Liverpool.

16th October 2021: Watford vs Liverpool

This Saturday at The Vic, Liverpool are hotly tipped for an easy victory against hosts Watford.  But do the heavens agree?

In contrast to the more traditional method of judging contest charts, where the home team are automatically awarded the 1st house and its ruler, the system of forecasting favoured by John Frawley in his book ‘Sports Astrology’ recommends that the 1st house represents the favourites:  In our chart, this gives the 1st house (and ruler Jupiter) to Liverpool and the opposing 7th house (and ruler Mercury) to underdogs Watford.

As is often the Moon’s aspects hold the key to the probable result.  She applies first to trine the antiscion of Jupiter at 07 Scorpio 40 (for Liverpool), promising a goal for the favourites.

Next the Moon applies to conjunct the antiscion of Mars (ruler of the 4th house, victory for the underdogs) at 09 Pisces 25.  Had this been a bodily conjunction, rather than just an aspect by antiscion, victory could have been Watford’s for the taking.  Although less conclusive, this aspect nevertheless augurs at least one goal for the home side.

The Moon’s next aspect is a square to Venus (10th ruler, victory for the favourites).  This final aspect of significance (over the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match) should conclude the game in Liverpool’s favour.

However, the balanced testimonies in this chart promise a much closer game than expected, and a strong performance from the home side.

9th October 2021: Switzerland vs Northern Ireland

When these teams last met on the field of battle (a month ago at Windsor Park) they fought to a goalless draw:  This Saturday’s Group C World Cup European Qualifier looks set to be equally close.

Placed 2nd in the Group Table, with two wins to their credit, hosts Switzerland are the favourites and are awarded the 1st House and its ruler, Mercury.

Northern Ireland, whose impressive performance at Windsor Park held Switzerland to a draw, are just behind them in the Table at 3rd place.  As rivals to the favourites, they are signified by the opposing 7th house and its ruler Jupiter.

Mercury, for Switzerland, is retrograde and combust (very close to the Sun).  A retrograde planet is not usually hindered in contest charts, but combustion is a severe debility.  Balanced against this, the benefic North Node applies retrograde to conjunct the 1st House cusp.

Northern Ireland must contend with the pernicious effects of the South Node applying to the 7th House cusp, but also receive a significant boost from the Moon’s placement just inside the 7th House.  Sometimes, the Moon’s placement just inside a team’s house is enough to win them the match, but the impending Lunar Eclipse may diminish the power of this positive testimony.

So we have one positive and one negative testimony for each team:  A closely fought match seems likely.  Can the Moon’s aspects throw any light on a possible winner?

The Moon applies to a retrograde Saturn, ruler of the 10th House (victory for the favourites).  This is very fortunate for hosts Switzerland.

Another close game is indicated, with a win for the home team the most likely outcome.  The approaching Lunar Eclipse could throw in some unpredictability so expect the unexpected!

2nd October 2021: Manchester Utd vs Everton

Currently placed in the table at 4th and 5th respectively, and with 3 wins each, the fortunes of Manchester United and Everton couldn’t be closer.  Nevertheless, the pundits seem confident that Manchester United are odds-on favourites:  As such, they are awarded the 1st house and its ruling planet Jupiter (22 Aquarius 44 retrograde) as their main significators.

Rivals Everton are described by the opposing 7th house and its  ruler Mercury (also retrograde at 23 Libra 47).

The Moon, who describes how events will unfold during the match, applies to oppose Jupiter.  In contest charts, the nature of the Moon’s aspect matters less than the planet she aspects:  Although this aspect is an opposition, it is still a very good sign for the favourites.

The Moon then makes a sextile to Mercury.  This is equally beneficial to Everton:  Clearly a draw cannot be ruled out.

However, the Moon’s next aspect is a sextile to Venus.  As Venus rules the 10th house (victory for the favourites), this may tip the scales in favour of Manchester United.  This aspect is just outside the 5 degree orb usually considered effective for a 90 minute football match, so Everton should be on their guard in the latter stages of the game (and particularly during any extra time) when Manchester United could seize the advantage.
