5th February 2022: Burnley vs Watford

Although Watford are placed just ahead of Burnley in the table, at 14 points to 12, Burnley’s recent record against Watford is stronger and they have the traditional advantage of playing in front of a home crowd. The pundits therefore favour Burnley, but the heavens tell a more complex story…

As favourites, Burnley are signified by the Sun, ruler of the 1st house.

Saturn, Lord of the opposing 7th house represents Watford.

The main significators of both teams occupy the same degree of Aquarius. In traditional astrology, Saturn would be described as ‘cazimi’ (within the heart of the Sun), and would be considered greatly strengthened, as if he had been raised up to sit at the right hand of the king (represented by the Sun). However, in a contest chart, there is no king, just two opposing teams of (more or less) equal merit and status. As it seems unlikely that Burnley would embrace the role of ‘raising up’ or advancing the cause of their opponents Watford, Saturn being cazimi has little significance in this context.

What is more important is the Moon’s imminent sextile to both the Sun and Saturn, which hints at goals for both teams.

The only other aspect within the 5-degree range considered effective for a 90-minute football match is the Moon’s trine to the antiscion of Venus (Lord of the 10th house: Victory for the favourites) at 17 Sagittarius 53. Aspects involving antiscia are not conclusive, but this should give Burnley a slight advantage. Nevertheless, a draw cannot be ruled out.

29th January 2022: Peterborough United vs Sheffield United

For this weekend’s featured Championship fixture, Peterborough (currently 22nd in the table) play host to 12th-placed Sheffield United. The pundits favour Sheffield, but do the heavens agree?

As favourites, Sheffield United are signified by the Sun (Lord of the 1st House) and Venus (Lord of the 10th House; victory for the favourites). Their hosts, Peterborough, are represented by the ruler of the opposing 7th house (Saturn) and also by Mars (Lord of the 4th House; victory for the underdogs).

Saturn, for Peterborough, is strong in his own sign of Capricorn, but at over 4 degrees distant from the 7th house cusp, he is too far away to lend his strength to their cause (in contest charts, the effective distance from a house cusp is usually 1-2 degrees).

The Moon’s application to conjunct Venus (Lord of the 10th house) looks more promising for Sheffield, but here too, the Moon has to travel almost 6 degrees to perfect the aspect (5 degrees is usually the limit of effectiveness for a 90 minute football match). However, as a conjunction from the Moon to a main significator often decides the match, it would be unwise to completely ignore this. In a chart lacking any other significant testimonies, this powerful aspect may be enough to award Sheffield the match, with their best opportunities likely to occur in the latter stages of the game, or during extra time.

22nd January 2022: Everton vs Aston Villa

If this Saturday’s match between Everton and Aston Villa is half as interesting as its chart, we are in for a treat! Although Everton are the hosts, Aston Villa, currently tabled three places ahead at 23 points to Everton’s 19 are the favourites and are awarded the 1st house and its ruler, Mercury. Everton are signified by the ruler of the opposing 7th house, Jupiter. The 10th house (victory for the favourites) and the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) and their rulers are also taken into consideration.

The Part of Fortune’s placement on the cusp of the 10th house (the house of victory, usually for the favourites) has little significance. This would be the same for any match scheduled during the same phase of the Moon. However, the Part of Fortune’s placement of just over a degree from the Sun cannot be ignored: In this chart, the Sun rules the 4th house (victory for the underdogs), a positive testimony for Everton. This testimony is doubly lucky for them, as the Part of Fortune is also combust, a debility which again favours the underdogs. (Note: a smaller orb of aspect, 2 degrees maximum, is considered effective for combustion in contest charts).

The Sun (4th house ruler, victory for the underdogs) applies to conjunct the 10th house cusp, which is again favourable for Everton. However, Mercury, the main significator for favourites Aston Villa is already placed directly on the 10th house cusp and continues his retrograde motion to also conjunct the Part of Fortune. It looks as if Everton will put up a brave fight for victory, but Villa will just beat them to it. The Moon’s application to sextile the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 25 Scorpio 28) is also fortunate for the favourites and appears to confirm a win for Aston Villa.

16th January 2022: Hull City vs Stoke City

Although Hull are playing at home, Stoke City (currently placed 8th in the Championship League to Hull’s 19th) are clear favourites to win.

As favourites, Stoke City are represented by Venus, Lord of the 1st house.  Hull, their hosts and rivals, are awarded the opposing 7th house and its ruler, Mars.

There are two significant aspects in this chart, both of which favour Stoke:  First the Moon applies to trine the Part of Fortune, and next opposes Venus, Lord of the 1st house.  As the opposition with Venus is the last significant aspect the Moon makes over the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match, a win for the favourites seems likely.

*Astrological Note concerning the Moon’s aspects to the Part of Fortune*

In contest charts, the Moon’s orb of aspect is limited to around 5 degrees (sometimes a little more when extra time is probable).  This usually restricts the number of major aspects she can make, so if the Moon contacts a main significator, the nature of the aspect does not matter:  A challenging opposition is considered just as fortunate as a more positive trine.

However according to John Frawley’s system (as outlined in his book “Sports Astrology”) when the Moon aspects the Part of Fortune, some aspects favour the favourites and some are more fortunate for the underdogs:

  • The Moon conjunct, trine or sextile the Part of Fortune (or its antiscion) favours the favourites.
  • The Moon square or opposing the Part of Fortune (or its antiscion) favours the underdogs.

In this case, the Moon’s aspect to the Part of Fortune is a trine, so her testimony counts for favourites Stoke City

11th January 2022: Southampton vs Brentford

Our first match of the New Year is Tuesday night’s fixture between Southampton and Brentford. Although placed higher in the Premiership, with 23 points to Southampton’s 21, Brentford are not favoured by the pundits, who are backing home team Southampton to win. But do the stars agree?

At 21 Capricorn 33, the Sun (1st house ruler) represents favourites Southampton. Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7th house signifies Brentford and is placed in his own (traditional) sign at 13 Aquarius 06. The 10th house, (victory for the favourites) is also significant for Southampton, as the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) is for Brentford.

The Moon, who describes events during the contest, applies to conjunct the 10th house cusp. This is fortunate for the favourites, but is just a little too far from the cusp to be conclusive (ideally the Moon should be within 1-2 degrees either side of the house – this would virtually guarantee a win for the favourites). The Moon next applies to an opposition with the antiscion of Saturn at 16 Scorpio 54, signifying the chance of a goal for Brentford. Her final aspect, a trine to Venus (10th house ruler), should award the game to the favourites. If the pundits are correct, this is Southampton.

However, the application of Mars (4th house ruler) to the Part of Fortune is also significant. Although by itself not strong enough to predict a win, together with the Moon’s opposition to Saturn by antiscion this aspect promises a better than expected performance from Brentford. A win for the favourites is still the most likely, but a draw cannot be ruled out.

18th December 2021: Leeds vs Arsenal

With so many games cancelled this week, there are few matches to choose from.  The chart for Saturday’s game between hosts Leeds and favourites Arsenal is far from perfect, but there is just enough information to attempt a judgement.

The favourites (Arsenal) are usually represented by the 1st house and its ruler.  Cancer ascends, making the 1st house ruler the Moon.  As the Moon already has a key role in contest charts, that of significator of events, her dispositor Mercury is summoned from the substitutes bench to represent Arsenal.  Mercury’s new role as main significator for Arsenal supersedes his other function as ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs), in which he would have represented Leeds.

Leeds, as the underdogs, are represented by the ruler of the opposing 7th house, Saturn.

Mercury, at 07 Capricorn 12, applies to conjunct the Part of Fortune.  At 7 degrees, the orb of aspect is quite wide, but an applying conjunction with Fortuna is often significant and cannot be overlooked.

The antiscion of Mercury, at 22 Sagittarius 10, opposes the Moon.  This is a minor testimony which also supports Arsenal.

These testimonies are far from clear cut, but with two for Arsenal, and none for Leeds, it seems likely the result will go the way the pundits expect.

11th December 2021: Manchester City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Manchester City, currently topping the table, are favourites to win against visitors Wolves. But do the heavens agree?

The Moon’s placement inside the 1st house (representing the favourites) seems at first glance to be a vote of confidence for Manchester City. But the Moon is almost 7 degrees from the house cusp significantly hindering her power to help their cause.

The situation looks much better for their rivals: As ruler of the opposing 7th house, Mercury represents Wolves, and is placed directly on the cusp of the 10th house (the house of victory and success). Mercury’s opposition with the Part of Fortune (which would also favour Wolves) is just past, but the Moon’s next (and final aspect) significantly also aspects Mercury.

With Mercury (Wolves) playing such a key role, and Jupiter (Manchester City) very much on the sidelines, we can expect to see Wolves do much better than the pundits predict.

4th December 2021: West Ham vs Chelsea

Currently leading the Premiership, Chelsea are favourites to win against hosts West Ham this Saturday.  But could the home side have a few surprises in store?

In some systems of sporting prediction, the 1st house and its ruler are automatically awarded to the home team.  However, in John Frawley’s technique (outlined in his book, Sports Astrology), the 1st house always represents the favourites, while the opposing 7th house is given to the underdogs.

In the chart for this Saturday’s match, this distinction is very important, as Mercury (7th house ruler) is in the position of greatest strength; applying to a conjunction with the 10th house cusp (victory, success) and just about to make a conjunction with the Moon.

Mercury must travel just over 6 degrees to perfect his conjunction with the 10th house cusp, which is quite a distance for a 90-minute football fixture (even when extra time is allowed).  But this matters little, as the key to the match is the soon to be exact conjunction with the Moon:  A conjunction with the Moon is strong enough to beat all other testimonies and will likely award to the game to the team signified by Mercury.  Following the Frawley system, this will be West Ham.

27th November 2021: Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Placed 5th in the Premiership, 14 points separate Arsenal from Newcastle, languishing at the bottom of the table with just 6 points. Arsenal are clear favourites to win, but is this reflected in the heavens?

The astrological chart set for the kickoff seems to concur: Jupiter, Lord of the 10th house (victory and success) is placed just inside the cusp of the 1st house which represents Arsenal (because they are the favourites, not because they are the home team).  Victory is within their grasp.

The Sun, ruler of the opposing 7th house and main significator of Newcastle, applies to the cusp of the 10th house of victory.  However, at 10 degrees distant from the cusp, the Sun is too far away from the cusp to help the underdogs.

The Part of Fortune conjunct its own dispositor (Mars) is another strong testimony for the favourites.

With two strong testimonies for Arsenal, and none for Newcastle, this chart agrees with the pundits:  A win for for the home side is the most likely result
