This chart for Saturday’s Premier League fixture between Aston Villa and Newcastle illustrates the importance of the Moon in forecasting sporting contests.
Although Aston Villa have a home side advantage, Newcastle (placed 3rd in the table to Aston Villa’s 6th) are the pundits’ choice to win.
As favourites, Newcastle are awarded the 1st house and its ruler the Sun. They are also signified by Mars, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Their hosts and opponents are represented by Saturn (lord of the 7th house) and Venus (lord of the 4th house; victory for the underdogs).
Venus, lord of the 4th house, applies to conjunct the Part of Fortune. This is highly favourable for Aston Villa but not a conclusive testimony of victory (as it would be if the conjunction to the Part of Fortuna involved the 1st or 7th house rulers).
Instead, the applying lunar sextile to the Sun is to likely to decide this match for the favourites: Expect goals for both sides, but a win for Newcastle.
At the time of writing (3rd April 2023), Arsenal currently lead the Premiership table, while Liverpool are placed 8th. Despite this, the pundits favour Liverpool to win. But do the stars agree?
The favourites are described by the 1st house and its ruler the Sun. They are also represented by Venus, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Their opponents are awarded the 7th house and its ruler Saturn. Their co-significator is Mars, ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs).
In contest charts, the Moon has one of the most important roles; as she describes the progress of events during the match, she often holds the key to the result.
The first lunar aspect is a sextile to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 00 Libra 43): This favours the favourites.
The next aspect of the Moon is a trine to the antiscion of the ruler of the 10th house, Venus (at 01 Leo 57), also a positive testimony for the favourites.
Finally, the Moon applies to a square with Saturn (7th house ruler) at 03 Pisces 34. The Moon’s final aspect (over the 5-degree orb considered effective for a 90-minute football match), usually decides the result: Overall, this promises to be a close match, but victory will go to the underdogs.
If the pundits are correct and Liverpool truly are the favourites, this chart points to a win for Arsenal.
Although Crystal Palace are the hosts, Manchester City (currently placed second in the Table) are favourites so are awarded the 1st house and its ruler, Mercury.
Rivals Palace are represented by the opposing 7th house and its ruler, Jupiter.
The position of Mercury, just on the cusp of the 7th house, is the key to the result. If Mercury had been placed inside the 7th house, this would point to a victory for Palace, showing Manchester City in the power of their rivals. However, Mercury on the cusp of the 7th house, shows that Manchester City will dominate the match. With no other significant testimony in this chart, the probable outcome is a victory for the favourites.
Note that Mercury is in Pisces, the sign of his fall. In contest charts, essential dignity has little bearing on the outcome of the match. Manchester City may not play as well as expected, but could still do just enough to win.
At the time of writing, the Philadelphia Eagles are current favourites to win this year’s Super Bowl, and are signified by the Sun, ruler of the 1st house. Usually, they would also have the ruler of the 10th house (Mars) as their co-significator, but he already has an important role as dispositor of the Part of Fortune.
Saturn, lord of the opposing 7th house signifies the Kansas City Chiefs, who are also represented by Venus, lord of the 4th house.
Saturn (the Chiefs) is well placed in Aquarius, the sign he traditionally rules, and the Sun (the Eagles), also in Aquarius, is in the sign of his detriment.
However, accidental dignity tends to be far more important than essential dignity in contest charts, so all this tells us is that the Eagles will play well, but not necessarily that they will win.
The Part of Fortune is placed just inside the 10th house cusp, but it is not its bodily placement which is important: As John Frawley in his book “Sports Astrology” notes, the Part of Fortune is linked to the phase of the Moon, so any game which begins around the New Moon would be won by the favourites, and the underdogs would win any game timed to start on a Full Moon. History shows this is not the case.
The antiscion of the Part of Fortune is more variable by sign and placement over the course of a lunar month and therefore has greater significance. However, in this chart, at 04 Virgo 19, the antiscion of the Part of Fortune aspects none of the main significators and therefore has little to tell us about the result.
It is up to the Moon, who describes the progress of events during the game, to point us to the potential winner. The Moon applies to aspect both the Sun and Saturn by square but must travel well over the 5 degrees usually considered effective for American football (John Frawley has observed that there is even less leeway possible for this rule than in British soccer). Therefore, neither of these aspects should have a bearing on the result.
This leaves just one lunar aspect of note: A trine from the Moon to Venus, who as lord of the 4th house represents the Chiefs. A win for the Kansas City Chiefs seems the most likely outcome.

Placed 4th in the table to Bournemouth’s 19th, Newcastle are favourites and are signified by the Sun, ruler of the 1st house, and Venus, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7th house, represents Bournemouth, who have Mars (ruler of the 4th house) as their co-significator.
Saturn, for Bournemouth is strongly placed in Aquarius (a sign he traditionally rules) in the 7th house: Bournemouth will play well in front of their home crowd.
The Sun (representing Newcastle) placed just above the cusp of the 7th house might show a win for the favourites (depicting them essentially dominating their rivals), but, at just under 4 degrees, the Sun is a little too far from the cusp to be considered fully effective (1 or 2 degrees is more reliable).
It is the placement of the Part of Fortune (or rather its antiscion) which decides this match: At 27 Leo 15, the antiscion of the Part of Fortune is very closely conjunct the 1st house cusp, awarding the match to the favourites. The opposition between the antiscion of the Part of Fortune and Saturn (Bournemouth) further confirms this result.
Favourites Tottenham are awarded the 1st house and its ruler, the Sun. They are also represented by Venus, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Hosts and rivals Preston are signified by Saturn, ruler of the opposing 7th house, and Mars (ruler of the 4th house; victory for the underdogs).
Saturn is strongly placed in the 7th house in Aquarius, a sign he traditionally rules: Preston will put up a good fight, but will it be enough for them to win?
The Moon makes no applying aspect to any of the planets representing either side. However, her placement in the 10th house, very close to the 10th house cusp, favours the favourites.
Preston will play well, but it will not be enough to prevent victory for Spurs.
Despite setbacks due to illness and injury, Manchester Utd are nevertheless the pundits’ favourites to win against Reading. But do the heavens agree?
As ruler of the 1st and 10th houses, Mercury represents Manchester Utd, whilst opponents Reading are described by Jupiter, ruler of the 7th and 4th houses.
The Moon’s applying trine to Mercury is the only significant aspect (over the 5 degree orb usually effective for 90-minute football matches: Victory for favourites Manchester Utd seems likely.
The favourites for this World Cup final are described by the 1st house and its ruler. As Cancer rises and the Moon already has a key role describing the events of the match, the Moon’s dispositor (Venus) is called from the substitutes bench as the favourite’s main significator. They are also awarded Mars (ruler of the 10th house; victory for the favourites).
With Venus, ruler of the 4th house, already occupied, their opponents have just one planet; Saturn, ruler of the 7th house.
As with so many competition charts in this World Cup tournament; this chart is inconclusive.
The Moon makes no major aspects to signifiying planets.
Venus aspects the Part of Fortune by trine, favouring the favourites, but this aspect is separating: Representing the past, this aspect has no bearing on today’s match.
The only other testimony of note is the placement of Venus (signifying the favourites) on the cusp of the 7th house (their opponents): A strong testimony the favourites will win.
Which brings us to the most important question: Which team are the favourites? The pundits give Argentina a slight edge in the competition, but France are a close match in form and ability.
Conclusion: The favourites will have the edge, but this Tournament promises to keep us guessing until the final whistle.
Favourites France are signified by the Sun (Lord of the 1st house) and Venus (Lord of the 10th house). Rivals England are represented by Saturn, Lord of the opposing 7th house and Mars, Lord of the 4th house.
Mars applies retrograde to conjunct the antiscion of the Moon at 13 Gemini 27: This is a positive testimony for England. Not as powerful as if Mars applied to a bodily conjunction with the Moon, which is one of the strongest guarantees of victory, but fortunate, nonetheless.
The conjunction of the Part of Fortune with its dispositor, Jupiter, is a correspondingly fortunate testimony for France. This testimony would be stronger if Jupiter were applying to conjunct the Part of Fortune rather than separating, but it is still powerful.
This is a balanced chart – time will tell if it translates into a similarly balanced game. However, there must be a winner; a draw will not suffice. The Mars-Moon aspect is applying, rather than separating, which should make it slightly stronger than the separating conjunction between Jupiter and the Part of Fortune: England may possibly win, but the match will be close.

As favourites, Argentina are represented by the Sun, ruler of the 1st house, and Venus, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Opponents the Netherlands are signified by Saturn, ruler of the 7th house and Mars, ruler of the 4th.
The Moon aspects none of the main significators, either directly or by antiscion, within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match. A square aspect from the Moon to the antiscion of the Part of Fortune (at 13 Libra 28) might look promising for the Netherlands, were it closer to the effective orb.
The Part of Fortune is in the same sign as her dispositor, but too far away to be of significance.
In the absence of any testimonies favouring either team, there must still be a result. In such cases, the favourites usually win by default: A win for Argentina is the most likely outcome.

As the Moon already has an important role as significator of events, favourites Brazil only have one planet to represent them; Jupiter, Lord of the 10th house (victory for the favourites).
Croatia are signified by Saturn, Lord of the opposing 7th house and Mercury, Lord of the 4th.
The Moon applies first to oppose Mercury: A powerful testimony for Croatia.
Next, the Moon applies to conjunct the 1st house cusp: This is a tremendous boost for Brazil and will be a difficult testimony to beat. Especially as Jupiter, (Lord 10) is strongly placed in his own sign and house, if slightly too far from the house cusp to guarantee victory.
In combination, the testimonies of the Moon and Jupiter should add up to a win for Brazil, but Croatia will be determined not to make victory easy for them.
