The local kick off time for this Quarter Final between Norway and Italy in Geneva, Switzerland is 9pm CET on 16th July 2025
The pundits consider these teams very closely matched, which makes it difficult to pick the favourite. However, at the time of writing, Italy have slightly better odds to win: As the most likely favourites, they are signified by Saturn (lord of the 1st house).
The ruler of the 7th house (the house of rivals Norway) is the Moon. She already has a role describing the flow of events, so her dispositor Mars, (who as lord of the 10th house, the house of victory for the favourites, would usually be their co-significator) steps in as main significator for Norway.
Venus (ruler of the 4th house, the house of victory for the underdogs) would usually be co-significator for Norway, but also has another role which takes precedence, that of dispositor of the Part of Fortune.
As a result, each team has just one planet representing them: Saturn for Italy and Mars for Norway.
The Moon applies to conjunct the antiscion of Mars (at 12 Aries 57). Although conjunctions to antiscia are not as reliable as bodily conjunctions, this is a powerful testimony for Norway.
However, there is Neptune to consider. In his book “Gambler’s Dharma” which examines contest charts through the lens of Vedic astrology, Simon Chokoisky observes that Neptune has a dampening influence, unless he is retrograde when he is energising.
Here, Neptune is retrograde and almost conjunct Saturn (lord 1, for Italy). The aspect never perfects, as Saturn is also retrograde. However, the planets are close enough to be worth noting. In the Club World Cup final on 13th July 2025, Neptune certainly a powerful ally to Chelsea who, despite being the underdogs, trounced favourites Paris Saint Germain three goals to nil.
In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are thought to be more powerful. This may be because, when retrograde, planets are closer to the Earth and therefore shine more brightly in the sky. In this contest chart, just as in the Club World Cup Final, Saturn is retrograde. If this theory holds true for contest charts, favourites Italy may play even better than expected.
Either way, the effects of retrograde planets in sports astrology is an area worthy of further research.
This chart is an excellent opportunity to test the effects of the planets on sporting contests, as it contains several powerful but contradictory testimonies: The Moon (with her aspect to the antiscion of Mars) favours Norway, but if Neptune decides to lend his support to an already strong Italy, the favourites may yet win out.
