Sunday 9th October: Everton vs Manchester United

Despite last Sunday’s 6-3 defeat to rivals Manchester City, the odds still favour Manchester United to win this weekend against Everton. But do the heavens agree?

As favourites, Manchester United are represented by Venus (Lord 1) and Saturn (Lord 10, victory for the favourites).

Hosts and rivals Everton are signified by Mars (Lord of the opposing 7th house, and dispositor of the Moon; ruler of the 4th house).

The Moon, who describes how events will unfold during the match, applies to sextile Saturn. This, the only major lunar aspect over the 5-degree orb considered most reliable for a 90-minute football match, should award victory to the favourites.

There are other considerations, however: Venus (Lord 1) is combust (within 8 degrees of the Sun). This is a serious debility which is likely to adversely impact the performance of the favourites, potentially reducing the number of goals they score.

Are there any testimonies which favour Everton? The Part of Fortune is placed very close to the 7th house cusp, but as the Part of Fortune is derived from the phase of the Moon, this would be the same for any match played around the Full Moon. The underdogs do not win every Full Moon match, so this can be disregarded.

The antiscion of Saturn (at 11 Scorpio 16) is captured by the 7th house but placed too far from the house cusp to give Everton power over Manchester United’s hopes for victory.

In the absence of any testimonies in favour of the underdogs, the stars point to a win for favourites Manchester United. However, the Sun’s affliction of Venus suggests that their winning goal tally will not be particularly memorable.

Saturday 1st October 2022: Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

Currently at the top of the table, Arsenal are favoured to win and are signified by Jupiter (Lord 1) and Venus (Lord 10, victory for the favourites).

Rivals Tottenham are represented by Mercury (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Mars (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs).

At first glance, this chart looks good for the favourites, with Venus exactly on the cusp of her own house of victory.

However, Jupiter (Lord 1) placed just inside the 4th house has a different tale to tell: The 4th house represents victory for the underdogs and Jupiter is effectively held captive here.

The antiscion of Mercury, Lord 7), also in the 4th house at 05 Aries 44, is a little too far from the cusp to be conclusive but adds a measure of support to Tottenham: The signs are that the visitors are prepared to give as good as they get.

The Part of Fortune is very near her traditional dispositor, Saturn. As Saturn is retrograde, they are applying to conjunction: This is very positive for favourites Arsenal.

What does the Moon have to say? Her final aspect (over the 5-degree orb usually effective for 90-minute football matches), is an opposition to Mars who, as Lord of the 4th house, spells further success for Tottenham.

This is a rare contest chart, in which all main significators are in play: With testimonies so finely balanced, a close score is forecast and a draw cannot be ruled out.

Saturday 24th September 2022 UEFA Nations League: Northern Ireland vs Kosovo

Despite their recent lacklustre home form and placement at the bottom of their UEFA Nations League group, the bookies still favour Northern Ireland to win. This writer disagrees: In the last match between these teams, Kosovo won and currently reside 2nd in the group, with 6 points to Northern Ireland’s 2. Logically, this makes Kosovo the favourites.

Kosovo are represented by Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10, victory for the favourites). With the Moon (Lord 7) already occupied describing the progress of events, her dispositor Mercury steps in as main significator for rivals Northern Ireland. Venus, Lord 4 (victory for the underdogs) is their co-significator.

Pluto, who John Frawley has observed acts as a malefic for the favourites, is in the 1st house but too far from the house cusp to do serious damage to Kosovo’s hopes.

The Moon’s immediate application to square Mars (Lord 10) is very fortunate for the favourites. As this is the only major lunar aspect over the 5-degree orb considered reliable for a 90-minute football match, Kosovo should emerge the victors.

If events stray into extra time, the balance of power swings to Northern Ireland: The Moon’s next aspect is a conjunction to Venus (Lord 4). A conjunction from the Moon to a team’s significator is usually conclusive in their favour but, at 8-degrees before the aspect perfects, extra time would have to be involved for Northern Ireland to salvage any points.

Saturday 17th September 2022: Tottenham Hotspur vs Leicester City

With Tottenham placed 3rd in the League, it is no surprise that they are favourites to win Saturday’s match at home against Leicester City, currently at the bottom of the table. Will Spurs have it all their own way, or will Leicester have something else to say? Let’s see what the heavens forecast…

As favourites, Spurs are described by Saturn (Lord 1) and Jupiter (Lord 10; victory for the favourites. Their rivals, Leicester, have the Sun (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Mercury (Lord 4; victory for the underdogs).

Describing how events will unfold, the Moon first applies to square the Sun. This is very positive for Leicester and is a sign that they may have a few surprises in store for favourites and pundits alike.

The only other aspects the Moon makes over the 5-degree orb usually effective for a 90-minute football match are to antiscion: First, a square to the antiscion of Mercury (again for Leicester, at 24 Pisces 10) and next a square to the antiscion of Jupiter (at 25 Virgo 06). Conjunctions and oppositions from the Moon to antiscia are very significant, other aspects less so. Nevertheless, it is likely that there will be goals for both teams, and Leicester will do much better than the pundits expect.

Saturday 3rd September 2022: Everton vs Liverpool

Liverpool are favourites to win this hotly contested local derby: They are signified by Mars (Lord 1) and Mercury (Lord 10; the house which represents victory for the favourites).

Everton, even though they are playing at home, are the underdogs: They are awarded Venus, (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Jupiter (Lord 4).

The Moon applies to oppose Mars, a strong testimony for Liverpool which is further confirmed by the applying sextile between the Moon and the Part of Fortune.

In the absence of any corresponding testimonies for Everton, the chart confirms that Liverpool will carry the day.

Will ‘The Sandman’ return? Horary Astrology investigates…

Film and television adaptations of much-beloved books and graphic novels are often risky: It often proves tricky to meet the high expectations of an audience who have already taken the characters to their hearts. The last installment of The Sandman; the adventures of Morpheus, Lord of the Dream World, was published in 1996 but author Neil Gaiman has waited over a decade to give his stamp of approval to a new adaptation for Netflix which began filming in 2020.

With the Netflix series co-created by Gaiman himself, and (in this astrologer’s opinion) perfect casting, The Sandman has achieved the near-impossible task of pleasing audience and critics alike. But the prohibitive production costs necessary to bring the author’s vision to the screen has cast a shadow of doubt over prospects for a second series.

Horary astrology offers insight into all manner of questions, so I asked, “Will ‘The Sandman’ return for a second series?”.

This is what the chart (cast for the time and place the question was asked) had to say…

There are many points worthy of note in this chart: The Ascending degree (11 Scorpio 34) corresponds closely to the placement of Mercury (significator of writers and writing) at author Neil Gaiman’s birth: The work carries his signature of approval, so to speak.

The Moon, Lord of the 9th house of dreams, is on the Ascendant and is in Scorpio, sign of magic, mystery and the supernatural – all key themes in the books and the series.

Venus, the planet which rules art and artists is in a powerful position at the top of the chart, applying to the cusp of the 10th house. In horary astrology, 10th house represents victory and success, so here the placement of Venus reflects both the critical acclaim the series has attracted, and its ability to capture (and recapture) the #1 spot in the Netflix rankings.

All above points confirm the chart accurately describes the matter asked about, but for the answer to our question we need to look elsewhere.

All creative works, especially the performing arts, are ruled by the 5th house: To discover the fate of the series, we must look at the planet which rules the 5th house and what is happening to it.

Pisces is on the cusp of the 5th house, a zodiac sign traditionally ruled by Jupiter (although modern astrology, if not horary astrology, allows Neptune as co-ruler). Jupiter is at 06 Aries 49 and retrograde.

Planets are retrograde when they appear to be moving backwards in the sky. In horary astrology, this can be good or bad, depending on the context of the question. Here, where we are asking about a series coming back to our screens, it is exactly what we hope to see: The Sandman will return for a second series.

Saturday 27th August 2022: Arsenal vs Fulham

The match chart for this Saturday’s game between Arsenal and Fulham once again illustrates the importance of the Part of Fortune in judging contest charts.

Arsenal are the favourites, and are awarded Saturn (Lord 1) and Mars (Lord 10, victory for the favourites) as their significators.

With the Moon already occupied as significator of the progress of events, her dispositor Mercury steps in as a substitute for Lord 7, main significator for rivals Fulham. They are also awarded Venus (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs).

However, none of these planets have a major role in the forthcoming match: The main players are the Moon and the Part of Fortune.

The Part of Fortune is in the 1st house, very close to the house cusp. This is always the case with matches played around the new Moon, yet the records show that the favourites do not win every match scheduled at this time: Therefore, the bodily placement of the Part of Fortune is not considered significant.

Nor do the placement of the North and South Nodes (in the 4th and 10th houses) signify: They only carry weight in contest charts when they aspect the teams planetary significators.

More important is the Moon’s trine to the Part of Fortune. Within the 5-degree orb considered reliable for 90-minute football matches, this is a powerful testimony for the favourites which would be difficult to beat even if there were any other testimonies of equal strength in the chart.

Instead, we have only one weak testimony for Fulham, a trine from the Moon to the antiscion of Venus (Lord 4) at 10 Taurus 29. At best this signifies a goal for Fulham, but is not sufficiently powerful to threaten Arsenal’s anticipated victory.

Friday 20th August 2022: Spurs vs Wolves

The Part of Fortune often has a key part to play in sporting contests, and never more so than this intriguing chart for Saturday’s match between Spurs and Wolves.

As favourites, Spurs are awarded Mars (Lord 1) and the Sun (Lord of the 10th house; victory for the favourites).

Rivals Wolves are represented by Venus (Lord of the opposing 7th house) and Saturn (Lord of the 4th house; victory for the underdogs).

The Sun (for Spurs) is strongly placed in his own house, but too far from the house cusp to help his team’s cause:  An orb of around 2 degrees or less is usually the most effective in such cases.

Saturn (for Wolves) is also strongly placed in his own house but is much closer to the house cusp.  Because of his retrograde motion, he is moving closer still:  Spurs would do well not to underestimate Wolves, who will prove formidable opposition.

With the Moon, (who represents the progress of events) making no aspects to any of the main significators within the 5-degree orb usually considered effective for 90-minute football matches, the Part of Fortune steps forward as the key player in this chart.

Being linked to the Moon’s phases, the placement of the Part of Fortune by house is rarely significant:  Every lunar month it will be in the same position, matching its related point in the Moon’s cycle.  The placement of the Part of Fortune in the 10th house can therefore be overlooked.

However, the conjunction of the Part of Fortune with the Sun (Lord 10) is worthy of note:  Had the orb of aspect been closer, this would award Spurs the match.  At over 7 degrees distant, such a result cannot be guaranteed, but the aspect is nevertheless important.

The applying opposition between Saturn and the Part of Fortune is closer, and therefore more significant:  It is further evidence that Wolves will be a force to be reckoned with.

If the bodily placement of the Part of Fortune is not significant, the same cannot be said for its antiscion. Here, at 09 Taurus 49, it is placed in the 7th house: A vote of confidence for Wolves. It is not close enough to the cusp to signify a win (an orb of 2 degrees or less would be required to guarantee Wolves the match) but it is a testimony worthy of consideration.

So, we have one testimony for Spurs and three for Wolves, none of which conclusively promise a win for either side.

Wolves will have to play extremely well to win, but will certainly give Spurs a run for their money: A close result is to be expected and a draw cannot be ruled out.
