Euro 2020 Day 7: 17th June 2021

(Chart cast for BST: GMT+1)

With Christian Eriksen recovering in hospital, and his team still processing the events of last weekend, Denmark face an unusually challenging match against Belgium this Thursday.  But what do the stars say about this crucial fixture?

Placed 1st in the FIFA World Rankings, Belgium are one of the teams most hotly tipped to win the tournament.  It comes as no surprise that they are favourites to win this match and are therefore described by the 1st house and its ruler Mars.

Venus, ruler of the opposing 7th house, represents Denmark.

Had kickoff occurred just two hours earlier, the Moon’s application to a sextile with Venus could have won the game for Denmark.  However, that aspect is now long past, and the Moon’s next aspect is a trine to the antiscion of Mars (at 26 Taurus 15), a minor testimony for Belgium.  This aspect perfects slightly beyond the 5 degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match, but with extra time usual in tournament matches, some leeway can be allowed.

The antiscion of the Part of Fortune, at 10 Scorpio 46 is just close enough to the 1st house cusp to be influential, and is another minor positive testimony for Belgium.

However, by far the strongest testimony in the chart is the application of retrograde Saturn to the Part of Fortune (both in Aquarius): Aquarius being traditionally ruled by Saturn, the conjunction of the Part of Fortune with its own dispositor favours the favourites, and is the most compelling testimony of victory for Belgium.

A win for Belgium is the most likely outcome but expect some shake-ups along the way thanks to the placement of Uranus, the planet of all possibilities, on the 7th house cusp.  In a previous match, Uranus (again on the 7th house cusp) salvaged a point for underdogs Wales, when a goal for Switzerland was disallowed by VAR (Uranus rules technological innovations):  What surprises does he have in store for today’s match?

Euro 2020 Day 6: 16th June 2021

(Times are in BST: GMT +1)

Following a convincing win against Turkey, Italy are again favourites in their next Group A game against Switzerland.  Will the home crowd in Rome be cheering another victory or do the heavens have other plans?

Favourites Italy are represented by Jupiter (Lord 1), while Mercury (Lord of the 7th house) describe their opponents Switzerland.  Due to the late degree rising, if the kickoff time is even a few minutes late the sign on the cusp of the 1st house will change from Sagittarius to Capricorn, and Saturn will take over from Jupiter as main significator for Italy.

The sign Cancer will then rule the 7th house cusp, and Switzerland will be described by the Moon’s dispositor (the Moon herself always signifies the flow of events in contest charts, so never rules teams or houses).  The Moon’s dispositor is Mercury, so the main significator for Switzerland will not change, no matter what time the match kicks off. As Mercury is combust, this is a hindrance for Switzerland.

Balanced against the debility of a combust Mercury, Moon’s application to oppose the Part of Fortune is a favourable testimony which promises a goal for Switzerland. As this is the only lunar aspect within the 5 degrees usually effective for a 90-minute football match this might also win them the match.

However, it is a rare tournament fixture where extra time does not come into play, allowing a little extra leeway involving aspects from the Moon.  Given their current form, it would be unusual if Italy do not score at least one goal and the Moon’s sextile to Venus (Lord 10, victory for Italy) will give them their chance.

Almost immediately the Moon trines Mercury (Lord 7), representing another late opportunity for Switzerland.

Expect a closely-fought game, where all is likely to be decided in the latter stages. The last few minutes could prove particularly crucial.

Euro 2020 Day 5: 15th June 2021

Placed 2nd in the FIFA World rankings France are serious contenders for the tournament title.  It would also be foolish to rule Germany (currently ranked 12th) out of the running.  Their debut game in Munich will test the mettle of both teams:  What do the stars say about this crucial fixture?

Favourites France are awarded the 1st house and its ruler Jupiter, strong in Pisces, the sign he traditionally rules.  The opposing 7th house and its ruler Mercury represent Germany.  Mercury is also placed in his own sign but is weakened by combustion (placed within 8 degrees of the Sun).  This can be a serious debility in contest charts, as we witnessed in the opening game of the tournament:  In that game the same combust Mercury represented Turkey; seemingly reflecting their struggle to maintain consistency and form against opponents Italy.

The Moon first applies to square the antiscion of Mars (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs) at 27 Scorpio 24.  This is a minor testimony for Germany which promises them at least one goal.

Following this, the Moon will be void of course (making no aspect to any other planet in the sign where she is placed).  However, as soon as she enters Virgo, she opposes Jupiter, Lord 1.  This is a positive testimony for favourites France, if not entirely conclusive:   The aspect is within the moiety of the two planets, as accords with the writings of Dariot, but the Moon is not placed in Cancer, Taurus, Sagittarius or Pisces, signs which William Lilly theorised would give her power to act even though void of course.  Furthermore, the Moon has to travel further than the 5 degrees usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match.

This is a tricky game to predict:  None of the testimonies are by any means conclusive, and a draw cannot be ruled out.

Expect a creditable showing from Germany, although they may struggle against the baleful effects of that combust Mercury.

If the imminent Moon/Jupiter opposition can make its influence felt, the best chances for France are likely to come within the latter stages of the game:  The final result will be the test!

Euro 2020 Day 4: 14th June 2021

(Times are BST: GMT+ 1)

Ranked second in Group D, Czech Republic are favourites for their first fixture at Hampden Park.  However, hosts Scotland are almost their equals in the FIFA World Rankings and promise a closer-fought game than their placement at the bottom of Group D might suggest.

As favourites, the Czech Republic are represented by Venus, ruler of the 1st house.  Mars, ruler of the opposing 7th house will be star player for Scotland.

The Moon describes the flow of events.  She first applies to oppose Saturn, a very positive testimony for Scotland, as Saturn is ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs).

Her next aspect is a sextile to the antiscion of Venus (at 15 Gemini 23), a minor testimony which nevertheless promises at least one goal for the Czech Republic.

This aspect is followed by a square to the Part of Fortune which again favours Scotland. Both these aspects perfect outside the 5 degree orb usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match; a sign that the latter stages of the game (or extra time) will prove the most eventful.

So we have two testimonies for Scotland, and only one (minor) testimony for the Czech Republic:  As these teams are so evenly matched, much depends on whether the favourite has been correctly chosen, but the home crowd should have cause to celebrate.

Euro 2020 Day 3: 13th June 2021

All match times are in BST (GMT+1)

On to Day 3, and England vs Croatia:  To avoid bias, we’re going to eschew the opinions of the English bookmakers and rely purely on table placement to decide the favourites.

Placed top of Group D, Croatia are favourites and are awarded the 1st house and its ruler Venus.  England are represented by the ruler of the opposing 7th house, Mars.  The Moon makes no further aspects in the sign where she is placed, and a void of course Moon usually maintains the status quo, awarding the game to the favourites.

William Lilly writes; “yet somewhat she (the Moon) performs if void of course and be either in Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces.” Here, the Moon is in her own sign of Cancer, so still has some agency.

On leaving Cancer she immediately applies to conjunct Mars, but that aspect is already within the moiety of the orbs of the Moon and Mars, which Dariot believed would cause the aspect to begin its influence even before the Moon left Cancer for Leo.

Should this be the case, the Moon’s applying conjunction to Mars forecasts a win for England:  The result will be the test!

Euro 2020 Day 2: 12th June 2021

Switzerland are expected to win against Wales in their first tournament match in Azerbaijan. Do the stars side with the pundits or do the planets have a surprise in store?

All match times are BST (GMT+1)

Switzerland as favourites are signified by the 1st house and its ruler Mars. Venus, Lady of the opposing 7th house represents Wales.

Uranus closely aspects the 7th house cusp. This is the most intriguing testimony in the chart, particularly as Uranus and a retrograde Saturn (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs) apply to aspect by square. Look for a sudden and unexpected event involving Wales. If Uranus was placed just inside the 7th house, this would be a more convincing testimony in favour of Wales, as Uranus would, so to speak, be working for them. Here, the planet of all possibilities is a free agent, and his effects could go either way.

The Moon applies to trine Saturn’s antiscion (at 16 Scorpio 49): This testimony alone is not strong enough to bring Wales victory, but it should guarantee them a goal. However, the placement of this same antiscion just inside the 1st house is a compelling testimony for the favourites as it shows Wales’ hopes of victory ‘captured’ by Switzerland.

Goals are likely for both teams but overall the heavens make a better case for Switzerland. However, expect the unexpected due to the disruptive influence of Uranus.

Euro 2020 Day 1: 11th June 2021

All charts are set for BST (GMT+1)

Charts which are of particular astrological interest will be given priority. The aim is to post predictions for every day of Euro 2020, but not all games in the tournament will be featured.

After a year’s delay, the much anticipated Euro 2020 opens with a Group A fixture between Turkey and Italy. Italy, ranked top of their group, are tipped to win but will the stars smile on the favourites as they play their opening game in front of the home crowd in Rome?

Jupiter (Lord 1) represents favourites Italy, while the ruler of the opposing house (Lord 7, Mercury) steps in as star player for rivals Turkey. Both planets are strongly placed in signs they rule (Jupiter being the traditional ruler of Pisces).

Mercury is retrograde and combust (within 8 degrees of the Sun): Retrogradation is not usually a serious debility in contest charts but combustion is, and Mercury is still close enough to the Sun to cause problems for Turkey and could significantly affect their form.

The Moon signifies events during the match: Her aspects can also point to who will score goals and when. She applies first to oppose the Part of Fortune, a powerful testimony for Turkey, which would usually be enough to win them the match. Even with Mercury combust, this must signify at least one goal for Turkey.

However, following this aspects she immediately applies to conjunct Venus (Lady of the 10th House; victory for the favourites). To perfect this conjunction, the Moon will need to travel slightly beyond the 5 degrees orb usually considered effective for a 90 minute football match. However, in Euro tournaments extra time is not only a possibility, but practically a certainty, so this conjunction between the Moon and Venus points to a likely late opportunity which wins the game for Italy.

Expect goals for both teams. If the game remains at 90 minutes, Turkey may confound the pundits and do better than expected. However, if the match strays into extra time, Rome’s home crowd will have cause to celebrate.
