Placed 2nd in the FIFA World rankings France are serious contenders for the tournament title. It would also be foolish to rule Germany (currently ranked 12th) out of the running. Their debut game in Munich will test the mettle of both teams: What do the stars say about this crucial fixture?

Favourites France are awarded the 1st house and its ruler Jupiter, strong in Pisces, the sign he traditionally rules. The opposing 7th house and its ruler Mercury represent Germany. Mercury is also placed in his own sign but is weakened by combustion (placed within 8 degrees of the Sun). This can be a serious debility in contest charts, as we witnessed in the opening game of the tournament: In that game the same combust Mercury represented Turkey; seemingly reflecting their struggle to maintain consistency and form against opponents Italy.
The Moon first applies to square the antiscion of Mars (Lord 4, victory for the underdogs) at 27 Scorpio 24. This is a minor testimony for Germany which promises them at least one goal.
Following this, the Moon will be void of course (making no aspect to any other planet in the sign where she is placed). However, as soon as she enters Virgo, she opposes Jupiter, Lord 1. This is a positive testimony for favourites France, if not entirely conclusive: The aspect is within the moiety of the two planets, as accords with the writings of Dariot, but the Moon is not placed in Cancer, Taurus, Sagittarius or Pisces, signs which William Lilly theorised would give her power to act even though void of course. Furthermore, the Moon has to travel further than the 5 degrees usually considered effective for a 90-minute football match.
This is a tricky game to predict: None of the testimonies are by any means conclusive, and a draw cannot be ruled out.
Expect a creditable showing from Germany, although they may struggle against the baleful effects of that combust Mercury.
If the imminent Moon/Jupiter opposition can make its influence felt, the best chances for France are likely to come within the latter stages of the game: The final result will be the test!
