Championship Play-Off Final 27th May 2023: Coventry City vs Luton Town

Coventry City face Luton Town at Wembley this Saturday, for the Championship League play-off final. Luton Town are currently 3rd in the table, compared to Coventry City’s 5th place, and are favoured by the pundits to move up to the Premiership.

Venus (lord 1) represents favourites Luton. As the Moon, ruler of the 10th house (victory for the favourites) already has an important role as significator of events, her dispositor Mercury steps in as their co-significator.

Coventry City are represented by Mars, ruler of the opposing 7th house. Saturn, ruler of the 4th house (victory for the underdogs) is Coventry’s co-significator.

Mars (for Coventry) is placed in the 10th house but is too far from the house cusp (over 2 degrees) and in a different sign, so this testimony is not significant.

The Moon, significator of events, immediate applies to trine Saturn: This is highly positive for Coventry.

She next applies to trine Mercury, an aspect which favours Luton.

With testimonies so evenly balanced, we need something else to tip the balance in favour of one team or another.

Venus (lord 1) opposes the Part of Fortune. This aspect favours Luton and (if pundits are correct that Luton are the favourites) is highly likely to be their ticket to the Premiership.

  1. Why would Venus opposition Part of fortune favour Luton if she is the ruler of Luton. She makes hard aspect to the fortune which should favour the underdog.

    1. Well spotted! You are quite right, in this instance, I misapplied the rule: Consulting John Frawley’s book I am reminded that the opposition between Fortuna and Venus (lord 1) favours the underdogs. The balanced testimonies correctly indicated a close result (Luton won 6-5 on penalties) and the Moon’s last aspect, (which is often conclusive in contest charts) the trine to Mercury appears to be the decider.

  2. Thanks for your reply. You also said that the Moon applies to trine Saturn. She actually opposes Saturn, Since Moon’s aspect quality with the rulers doesn’t matter, she favours Coventry indeed. There are so many other testimonies for the Underdog. The Moon squares antiscia of Fortuna. Moon’s antiscia falls in 7th house within 2 degree orb. I would suggest you to use color method. It often gives more accurate results. Apparently, Luton played with red kit and Mars in Leo is a perfect match. Altough Moon’s last aspect is with Mercury, her aspect with part of fortune is said to be final! (I read it somewhere and it often works) Besides testimonies for the descendant team seems to be much stronger. So I doubt if Luton is ruled by Venus.

    1. Hi Emre, Thank you for spotting the error. I think my inner Virgo was on holiday the week I wrote that post! As you correctly state, an opposition or a trine would still be a testimony for Coventry. I have not previously come across your note on Fortuna (that the last aspect to Fortuna wins) but am interested to hear that you have had success with this and will research this point further in future contest charts. In Frawley’s book Sports Astrology (page 87 of the 2007 edition) he writes of lunar aspects to antiscion that “they’re very important, especially by conjunction or opposition. Other aspects to antiscia are less reliable, but seem to work if there is nothing else to overrule them”. On page 86 of the same book Frawley states that “The Moon’s final aspect usually wins”, so I would maintain the lunar trine to Mercury carried the result (1-1 at full time, then Luton won 6-5 on penalties). But the number of testimonies which favour Coventry (including the lunar square to the antiscion of Fortuna and the antiscion of the Moon in the 7th house, as you have noted) no doubt produced the very close result. This match really could not have been closer! I am glad you have got results with the colour method. It is not a system I have much used but have heard good things from several sources (including yourself) and am tempted to investigate further. One of the many things I love about astrology is that we are constantly presented with the opportunity to learn different systems, and try new methods 🙂 It is a constant learning journey. Thank you again for your feedback – I wish you every success for the future 🙂

  3. My north node is in Virgo so I involuntarily notice simple errors 🙂 I used to follow a horary sports site (I can share it with you if you wish) The site owner uses Frawley’s method but makes some contributions like the colour method. I learned it from him. He says “Moon’s aspect with POF or APOF is FINAL!” So by “final” I get that it is the most influential aspect. He also says that “if the Moon’s applying aspect is conjunction with one of the ruler, that is “end of story”! The winner is the team which is represented with that ruler!” So I tend to think that Moon-Pof or Apof aspects can outweigh Moon’s last aspect with rulers unless her aspect with the rulers is a conjunction. Yet, more examination of the charts is required. Your analysis of the charts are great. Thank you for your kind reply and nice wish.
