The local kick off time for the Women’s Euro Cup Final between England and Spain in Basel, Switzerland is 6pm CET on 27th July 2025. England are the defending European Champions, but Spain’s World Cup-winning side are on such impressive form that they are odds-on favourites to lift the tournament trophy.
As favourites, Spain are represented by Jupiter (lord of the 1st house) and Venus (lord of the 10th house, the house of victory for the favourites).
Opponents England are signified by Mercury (ruler of the 7th house) and Mars (ruler of the 4th house).
Mercury (for England) is applying retrograde to conjunct the Sun. This is known as combustion and is a severe debility. Notwithstanding the wide orb, this testimony is unfortunate for the Lionesses.
The Moon’s only significant aspect (over the 5-degree orb considered most reliable for 90-minute football matches) is a sextile to Jupiter, which is favourable for Spain.
There is only one testimony in favour of England, a trine to the antiscion of Mercury at 17 Taurus 52. However, this is far outside the 5-degree orb limit and may be pushing hope beyond the bounds of possibility.
The match is expected to be closely fought. The chart inclines towards a win for the favourites, which (at the time of writing) is Spain. A late challenge may be England’s best chance, but only if the game strays far into extra time or penalties.

I wasn’t brave enough to leave a comment before the result, and it is very easy to comment with hindsight. You are braver than me.
If we take Spain as 1st house ruled by Jupiter and England as 7th house ruled by Mercury, neither are in a very strong position, both are peregrine (on foreign soil) & not in strong houses. It would not be an easy win for either side. I think the signs that England would win, based on Frawley’s system, were there though – both Jupiter and Venus (ruler of victory for the 1st house) are in the 7th house – England’s house, England had control of Spain & Spain’s ability to win. Mercury retrograde is a good indication for a team going back and doing something again (defending champions winning again) and is applying to the sun which is the natural indicator of glory and success. The moon, the indicator of future events (as the moon moves the most quickly of everything) is applying to mars – the indicator of England’s victory (ruler of 4th house, England’s 10th house).
My reason for commenting is just to encourage people to follow sports astrology, not to belittle. Like I said I wasn’t confident enough to comment before the result but that is what I saw when I looked at the chart.

Thankyou, Ayesha – you make some excellent points! The classic John Frawley method, strictly applied, would require Jupiter and Venus to be be much closer to the house cusp (a couple of degrees at most, and both planets in the same sign as that on the cusp), but their testimonies could still be significant: Astrology is a field of ongoing research, and Sports Astrology is the ideal arena in which to test and develop astrological theories and techniques. It may be that a little extra leeway still works – and this is certainly worthy of further study. Your interpretation of Mercury retrograde is inspired – I very much like the image of England as defending champions ‘going back’ and repeating their previous win! On a slightly different point, I very rarely use the Part of Victory in contest judgements, but note that (using the formula Ascendant + Jupiter – Part of Spirit in Day charts) the Part of Victory in this chart is 16 Leo 11, making the Sun the dispositor of the Part of Victory, with Mercury (England) applying retrograde towards it: Perhaps this helped to take some of the venom out of the combustion. I am currently reading a book which applies Vedic astrology techniques to contest charts (Gambler’s Dharma by Simon Chokoisky: Sports Charts analysed with traditional and modern Vedic Astrology techniques), where the author mentions that retrograde planets (which usually appear brighter in the night sky), often gain extra strength. Not all the techniques in the book can be transferred over from Vedic to Western astrology, but Chokoisky’s theory about retrograde planets seems to be yielding good results so far. The Moon’s aspect to Mars (lord 4) at 23 Virgo 38, as with the trine to the antiscion of Mercury (at 17 Taurus 52) are well outside the 5-degree orb Frawley considers most reliable for a 90-minute football match, but can certainly signal a late opportunity: The longer the game continued, the more England’s chances improved for the better. There is certainly a case for allowing greater flexibility with orbs in football matches where a draw is not possible (in the case of a cup final, for example), especially for strong aspects like conjunctions: This would make the applying lunar conjunction with Mars a compelling argument of victory for England. Thank you again for your your comments, I wish you continued success with your studies of Sports astrology! 🙂
